Some bloke rang claiming he was from PayPal, saying there’d been dodgy stuff going on with my account. He said they were trying to stop a payment of £219 to Boots Ltd and asked me to give him the code they’d sent to my phone. When I got a bit wary and asked questions, he rushed me, saying there was another payment for the same amount, making it £438 in total, and insisted he needed the code to block them both.

Got a call from some bloke saying he was with HSBC’s Fraud Dept. He knew loads about me and mentioned a couple of dodgy transactions waiting to go through on my account. Thought it was legit at first, but when I rang HSBC, they said they hadn’t tried to contact me at all. Ended up cancelling my card and the two iffy charges got wiped. The guy had a proper British accent and really had the details down. Definitely a clever con.

My workmate got a call from a hidden number first. They tried to pull a scam on him. Later on, the same number popped up again, this time pretending to be HSBC fraud. Looks like it was a coordinated effort by a couple of people. When the caller started asking for stuff that didn't add up, my mate just ended the call straight away.

Got a call from someone claiming to be from my bank’s fraud team. They said they spotted unusual transactions from somewhere far away and were looking into it. They made it sound like they’d stopped the payments, but then asked for a code they said would cancel them. Don’t share any info or reply with the code, it’s a scam.

Honestly, these scammers are super slick. When they suddenly asked me about my balance and then hung up straight away, I figured I must be so broke even they didn’t want to waste their time on me. That’s when I decided to look into it and made sure by confirming with my bank. The phone number they used is basically just one number off from the real HSBC line. Proper dodgy and quite scary how believable they sound!

This was a clear con job - someone calling claiming to be from HSBC about some dodgy transactions on my card. It was the same bloke who called a couple of days earlier. I told him straight up we were onto him and had already reported the call on Monday. Then he started saying he was clearing out the bank account while we were still chatting. What a nasty piece of work (can’t quite put into words how vile he was). I double-checked with HSBC, and they confirmed no weird activity on my account at all - total scam.

A lot of organizations adopt 03 numbers instead of the pricier 08 numbers. For instance, a number of public sector bodies have moved from 0845 numbers to 0345. The price of calls is no more than calls to geographic numbers (01 or 02). The cost of calls depend on the time of the day, and most providers offer call packages that allow calls free of charge during certain times of the day. Mobile call costs vary based on the selected calling plan. Generally, these calls are included in free call packages.
