Got a letter informing me about penalties for late payment and interest built up on self assessment ?? dating back from 2012 until now!! I called the number provided but it asked for my mobile number!! I’ve been employed by my local council for 25 years, so they handle my salary and tax, I’m not self employed at all.

SCAM ALERT - Got a letter saying I owed HMRC money but when I called the official HMRC number, they said there’s no debt in my name. The phone number on the letter just puts you through to someone trying to get you to pay up right away. Don’t fall for it, say NO and verify your info directly with HMRC online.

This number could be legit. If you’ve got unpaid taxes, do settle up. BUT don’t hand over anything just because you got a call or letter from this number. Always ring HMRC on the phone number listed on your official tax letters.

Got a letter in the post that looked really official. I only moved recently, yet somehow they updated my address just three months after I informed HMRC! They claimed I owe £200 in late fees for Self Assessment from 2020 and 2021, even though I haven’t been self employed for almost four years now. When you call, they put you on hold forever and then suddenly throw more payment choices at you.

Got a letter claiming I owed over £3,000 for not submitting a self assessment from 17 years back. It looked proper legit since it mentioned stuff about my tax details. I even tried to appeal before my brother got the same letter. Then we realised it was all a load of rubbish and just a SCAM.

TOTAL RIP-OFF. Got a so-called official letter claiming I hadn’t submitted my tax returns since 2019. It said I was £2500 in debt. I stopped self-employed work back in 2015 and all my paperwork is sorted. Just another nasty scam from some dodgy people. Don’t fall for it. Honestly, if you owed money to the tax office, they’d definitely be in touch in a proper way.

This scam is really well organised, wonder why no ones tracking them down? They have Barclays account info, should be straightforward to catch. Got letters about payments and outstanding balances and all that. Feels like HMRC's system might have been compromised.

Blimey, this letter really freaked me out. These con artists are after a payment that's almost exactly what I owe. How on earth do they know the figure? What got me suspicious was them asking for an account payment from 2021 instead of 2022.

Got a letter from HMRC SA debt management telling me to ring this number. I phoned, a woman picked up, sounded really sleepy, like I disturbed her or something. She said she wanted my phone number so she could ring me back later coz they were tied up. Shouldn't they already have my number though? I looked up the number here and it looks like a scam. The worrying bit is my tax number matched what was in the letter. Proper scary stuff.

I got a letter claiming to be from HMRC Debt Management saying I owe money for Self Assessment Tax. Funny enough, a few days before that, I had a proper letter from the Real HMRC about the same thing but just a tiny amount that they'd sort out by changing my future tax code, so no extra steps needed from me. The legit letter also had the calculations on the back and matched parts of my National Insurance number. I'm reporting the suspicious letter that tells me to ring a different number, just to be safe.

A mate of mine who runs their own business got a letter claiming to be from HMRC, using the number 0300 200 3823. It had a UTR number in it, which nearly convinced me at first since I deal with UTRs all the time at work. But I remembered the number from a call I got a while back where they threatened to have me arrested, so I looked it up here on your site. I told my mate straight away it was a con and advised him not to pay anything.

Got a letter that seemed legit at first but the paper felt really cheap, just basic A4 and the fold was all wonky. When I got a letter from them before, I remember the paper being heavier with a watermark, and the fold was perfectly done by a machine. This time the phone number was only 3 digits from the real one, so bit fishy if you ask me.

I got a call from 0300 200 3823 because of a letter I received, which looked legit for the 2013/14 tax year. I tried another HMRC number and after waiting about 15 minutes, I spoke to a bloke named Thomas who was really helpful. He checked my 13/14 Self Assessment and confirmed it was dormant, which is spot on, and said I didn’t owe any money. He sounded a bit puzzled by the query, which is how I ended up here. They wanted me to pay for a missed self assessment, but I submitted mine online on 21st Jan 2015 at 20:49 - I even took a screenshot to prove it!

I called the number, and it sounded genuine at first. They suggested a plan and wanted me to phone again with what I could pay. But there was no background noise like you'd expect from a proper office, just a single voice. I’m not bothering to call them again.

Got a letter from HM Revenue & Customs saying I owe £236.18 for a late self assessment payment. It has a phone number 0300 200 3823 and says to call if I need help sorting the payment. There’s also a bank giro slip included for paying the amount. But when I checked my HMRC account online, there’s no mention of any debt at all.

Blimey, this letter has messed about sent loads of times, totally fake and even the envelope's dodgy cunts. Tried looking up the number on the HMRC site but it’s not there. I got a letter from them showing the same amount I owed HMRC, but the letter was dated a couple of days after I’d already paid it. Then, I got a call from that 078 number someone else here talked about, threatening to arrest me if I didn’t send them £4000 or whatever I could manage right then on the phone. It was really frightening, I almost got caught out.

Got a letter supposedly from HMRC but it didn’t have my name or National Insurance number on it. It had a bunch of phone numbers and said I needed to pay up, or else, with one number being 03002003823. Took a photo of it and sent it off to the real HMRC email just to check. I’ll ring the official HMRC number in the morning, defo not that dodgy one.

Got a letter saying I owe HMRC for self assessment, seemed proper at first but then, about a week later, got an automated call from a mobile number (07870 855722) saying ‘there’s an arrest warrant out for you.’ Messing with folks’ fears like that and trying to rip them off is just horrible behaviour.

got a letter asking for a late payment. for a second i thought it was legit, as the phone number and the automated voice sounded really similar. but then i saw the letter was addressed to a person, not the company, which seemed odd. plus, normally the accountant would just send an email if something was wrong.
