Got a letter at home that looks dodgy, claiming to be from HMRC but I’m not convinced it’s legit. Feels like a scam to me.

I received a letter, quite unremarkable and plain, stating it’s from HMAC. It instructed me to send the debt company to retrieve my possessions.

I recently received a letter indicating something about self-assessment, which is quite baffling as I've never dealt with such a thing before. Throughout my working life, I've consistently been employed and my taxes have always been taken care of at source. I found a phone number on the letter, purportedly from HMRC, but instead of calling, I decided to research it here on this site since the note was printed on standard white paper. Quite odd, wouldn't you say?

I received a letter recently regarding self-assessment, but I've never had to file one in my life since I’ve always been in PAYE. This letter had a number on it that piqued my curiosity. What on earth could this be about?

I got in touch with HMRC myself and was told this number is definitely used by fraudsters trying to trick people out of their money. These scammers often have quite a bit of your personal info, so always double check by calling HMRC using a phone number listed on their official site. They also fake details like Barclays 0300 123 1813, sort code 25-03-57, account 63464695. Also, any comments here saying the number is legit are likely just the scammers having a laugh.

Got a letter from hmrc and couldn’t find the phone number anywhere on the internet, so I rang the number listed on the official website just to be sure. The letter turned out to be legit so I guess the number is legit as well.

Absolute con artists! AVOID at all costs. I received a dodgy letter claiming to be from HMRC, stating I owed £1896.86. Thankfully, I had recently watched a documentary on fraud on the BBC, where an HMRC spokesperson reassured viewers that they would never resort to threats of involving debt collectors. The letter I got claimed they'd send one if I didn’t cough up immediately. I contacted HMRC using the legitimate number found on the gov.uk site and they confirmed it was a total scam. The reference number cited in the letter wasn't valid for them at all, and to top it off, it was printed on plain white paper-a definite giveaway, as HMRC doesn’t use that type of paper. The representative advised me to report it on the police's fraud website. Please, don’t dial the number they provide! Always verify through the gov.uk site for the right contact details. Thank heavens for that BBC programme on fraud-really opened my eyes! Cheers to the BBC!

Got a letter from 0300 200 3824 saying I owe them money, no call though. Anyone else think this might be a scam?

It’s HMRC for sure and they just verified it. However, I’d suggest ringing their official helpline for self assessment instead, as this number isn’t listed on their website. Still, it’s definitely HMRC.

What a dodgy situation! I received a letter regarding my self-assessment tax, and it had this number plastered all over it. I reached out to HMRC, but they didn’t verify whether it was genuine. From what I've gathered, the only legitimate HMRC contact for self-assessment is 03002003822. Be careful, everyone!

I'm quite concerned about this number that's claiming to be from HMRC. I've noticed it comes along with a few others starting with 0300 200 3436. There are also several permutations of the digits: 2416 has popped up three times, 3410 once, and 3407 and 3597 just once each. It's all a bit alarming, to be honest.

I never actually got a phone call, but I did get a letter that looked like it came from HMRC. I looked up the number on the internet and it showed up as some sort of 'reverse call service' or a Non-Profit group.

I’ve noticed 0300 numbers usually belong to government or public services. They took over from 0845 numbers since they’re less costly for people calling, especially if you’re on a mobile phone.
