I got in touch with HMRC myself and was told this number is definitely used by fraudsters trying to trick people out of their money. These scammers often have quite a bit of your personal info, so always double check by calling HMRC using a phone number listed on their official site. They also fake details like Barclays 0300 123 1813, sort code 25-03-57, account 63464695. Also, any comments here saying the number is legit are likely just the scammers having a laugh.

Got a letter from hmrc and couldn’t find the phone number anywhere on the internet, so I rang the number listed on the official website just to be sure. The letter turned out to be legit so I guess the number is legit as well.

SCAM ALERT! DO NOT get in touch with these people. I got a letter claiming to be from HMRC saying I owed £1896.86. Luckily, I'd recently seen a BBC programme about scams, where an HMRC official explained they never threaten to send debt collectors like this letter did if you don’t pay straight away. I called HMRC using the contact details on gov.uk and they told me it was a scam after I read out the letter. The reference number wasn’t one HMRC uses and the notice was printed on plain white paper, which they don’t do. The person at HMRC told me to report it on the police fraud site. So don’t ring the number on the letter - always double-check the official HMRC number from the government website. Really glad I watched that BBC fraud programme, saved me a lot of stress. It’s HMRC for sure and they just verified it. However, I’d suggest ringing their official helpline for self assessment instead, as this number isn’t listed on their website. Still, it’s definitely HMRC.

I got calls from this number saying it's HMRC, but then there were a bunch of others too starting with 0300 200 3436. Heard it like three times, plus 2416 popped up twice, 3410 once, then 3407 once and also 3597. Bit concerning if you ask me.

I never actually got a phone call, but I did get a letter that looked like it came from HMRC. I looked up the number on the internet and it showed up as some sort of 'reverse call service' or a Non-Profit group.

I’ve noticed 0300 numbers usually belong to government or public services. They took over from 0845 numbers since they’re less costly for people calling, especially if you’re on a mobile phone.
