A couple of weeks back, a letter asking for the £27k was dropped off in a plain brown envelope. This isn’t the first time we’ve dealt with this kind of thing, so looks like these fraudsters are back at it again. Just a heads up to everyone - if you get anything from ‘HMRC’, be sure to look carefully and double-check, these letters show plenty of red flags.

Got a letter that looked just like it was from "HMRC" saying I owed money for PAYE, which seemed legit at first. I was certain my PAYE was all paid up though. They actually tried to con a pretty big police department with thousands of officers (won’t say which one tho). There’s a clear sign it’s a scam, so if you’re unsure, just ring up HMRC using the contact listed on the official Gov.uk site, definitely don’t use the number the scammers provide.

Got another bogus letter pretending to be from “HMRC” claiming I owe employers NI from seven years back and telling me to ring 0300 200 3819. I’ll be reporting this to Trading Standards again, but they usually just say they’ll note it down and can’t prevent these letters landing in my post. Not much help at all! What they really should do is track down those behind this scam and maybe update me on any progress!

This is just another fraudulent message pretending to be from “HMRC”. I’ve been getting these kinds of letters on and off over the past couple of years. I checked with both my accountant and HMRC directly, and they both said I don’t owe a penny, so best just to disregard it. I’ve reported it to Trading Standards before and will be doing so again with this one. Don’t trust the overly positive reviews on this website and absolutely don’t pay anything. I even logged into my official HMRC account and there’s no record of this supposed debt.

Got a letter from what looks like HMRC about some mapping work limited charge of £38,903.00, saying I owe money. It wrongly says I’m an employer, which I’m definitely not. Just received another letter from this number, looks exactly like a legit HMRC letter with all my company info and references spot on, except the phone number is different. This makes about 8 times in the past year. Whenever I get one, I double check with the accountant who always says there’s no payment due. Funny thing is, the amount they ask for changes each time and they never mention earlier letters or unpaid sums. Same phone number to call though, which is definitely NOT HMRC.

This isn’t a scam at all. I got a letter with this number on it. I dialled HMRC but put 3200 in instead of 3819, and it turns out it’s the debt management team at HMRC. It’s related to National Insurance and tax stuff.

I don't think its a scam, more likely a deactivated account linked to you. Try calling HMRC on (0300 200 3200) and say "fraud" when the automated system asks. Then give them the reference number from the letter. Something similar happened to me cuz I accidentally opened 2 PAYE accounts, and some "specified charges" around £200 kept getting added to the inactive one. They ended up closing that account and wiping the charges.

My daughter has now got this kind of letter about overdue tax payments for 22/23 twice. This is NOT some kind of scam. Just make sure you get a proper HMRC phone number from a reliable source and ring them up, they'll verify if you do owe any money for whatever it might be. Don’t just brush off the official HMRC letter. After my mum died in August 2021, I called the pension office to stop her payments. I only found out she had one extra week of money in her account. I thought I'd sort it out and pay it back later. The 0300 200 3819 number is definitely a legit HMRC PAYE Debt Management contact. I've had letters telling me to ring this number, and I checked with HMRC directly using a number I knew was real. It's all genuine.

I was a bit worried after coming across this page, so I cancelled my card and tried to stop the payment through Santander. However, after ringing HMRC this morning, I found the official numbers on their website are: 0300 200 3401 and 0300 200 3814 for HMRC debt management. From now on, I’ll pay via BACS, and you can always confirm the sort code on HMRC’s website - it’s sort code 08 32 10 and account number 1200 1039. So you can be sure it’s legit.

Got a letter saying I owe class 1 NIC with this number on it, but the reference number wasn’t mine, so I was a bit iffy about it. The letter was proper official looking, even came in a brown envelope with a stamp. I rang HMRC to check and it turned out to be dodgy. Told action fraud, the cops, and HMRC about it - these cheats are really shameless.

Got a dodgy letter asking me to pay some debt, but I’m PAYE and my taxes are all sorted, no debts at all. The letter tells me to ring 03002003819 and hand over payment info. They didn’t even use my name. Already reported it.

If you need to reach HMRC, the proper phone number is 0300 200 3300. The scam letter I got had a different contact number though, 0300 200 3819, asking for payment and bank info. They didn’t use my name or any real details, just some random reference number. Pretty dodgy. I’m definitely going to report this scam.
