I got a call this morning threatening me with arrest if I didn’t pay up. I asked how I could be sure they were legit, and the woman said she understood my worries and if I made a payment, she’d send over a letter with all the info. I got a call like that today saying I was gonna get arrested, so I pressed one. They couldn’t answer any of my questions and just hung up. I rang the number back after waiting ages, and there was a message asking who I wanted to speak to. When I explained everything, the person said some scammers are using their number, which is actually genuine, to trick people out of their money. I even gave my national insurance number to check I wasn’t in any trouble, and I wasn’t. Makes you really question who you can trust these days.

I rang “0300 200 3313” and it really is an HMRC number. But the woman told me if HMRC rings you, your phone would show “private number” and they ALWAYS send a letter first, never just a call. So scammers must be faking HMRC’s number. HMRC’s advice is to never pick up and block these numbers, but they seem to have loads of them to try.
