About an hour ago, I got a call from 02 8317 3237 but didn’t pick up, just like with this latest call from the same number. I generally avoid answering calls from out of state unless I’m waiting for one. My rule is, if it's important, they’ll leave a message and I can ring back later. Otherwise, I just look up the number online and block it straight away. The annoying thing is these scammers keep switching numbers, so my blocked list is packed full - it’s seriously frustrating!

On Tuesday these lot rang me up and couldn’t even get my name right. I told them in no uncertain terms, if you cannae speak proper English don’t bother calling again. Then they had the cheek to threaten police - I said go ahead, you’re not from HMRC, just trying to scam me. I asked them for their name, birthday, NI number, and address - oh, and the phone went dead, quick as that. They hate it when the tables are turned. Seriously, don’t give them a single bit of info!

Got a recorded call claiming to be from HMRC but the bloke on the line had a really American accent, telling me there’s some tax fraud on my name and threatening arrest, then asked to press 1 to talk to someone. Definitely a scam. I always report these sorts of calls to the ICO, but despite being signed up to the TPS, they keep coming through. If you get anything like this, please make sure you report it to the ICO, these calls need to be put to an end.

This number really does belong to HMRC, but scammers are faking it on their end, so when you get a call it looks like it’s from HMRC even though it’s from somewhere else entirely. Most likely, a UK phone company like BT is letting this spoofing happen. Best thing to do is just not answer - it’s good to remember HMRC don’t usually ring you up out of the blue.

Someone ringing up saying they’re from the tax office and that I’m getting arrested for fraud. I had a right laugh pretending to organise a payment of a few grand to avoid the cops turning up. After a bit, he twigged I was messing about and got proper narked. Blocked him straight away! At least I killed 20 minutes of his day.

About three quarters of an hour back I got a call from some bloke claiming I was involved in tax dodging. He kept telling me to quit giggling and swore he was calling straight from London, nattering on about how folks from there speak. Faking caller IDs is pretty simple nowadays. Using certain software, anyone can make it look like a call is coming from just about any number. I don’t think HMRC’s systems have been hacked or anything - it’s more likely scammers are just using their official number to make the scam seem more convincing and get more people to fall for it. Also, it’s a good idea to keep your voicemail greeting vague and avoid mentioning your name if you can. Scammers might use those details to put together info about you (like your name and number) which they could exploit later on.
