I recently attempted to ring a petrol station in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, using the number 01945 450222, which is advertised on the Shell and Spar store locators. To my surprise, I was greeted by a recorded message from a chap announcing that the number is no longer operational and could be acquired by contacting [email protected]. The recording went on to suggest that I reach out to directory enquiries by dialling "118 023," which comes at a rather steep rate of £6.98 per minute, not including any standard charges from my network provider. It seems likely that this Power Tel outfit is somehow affiliated with the 118 023 number.

The number 118 023 is a directory enquiries service that can rack up charges of £6.98 a minute, on top of whatever your provider charges. It's run by Power Tel, a company that takes over numbers that’ve been left unused, then plays a pre-recorded message urging callers to ring this pricey 118 number instead. If you think you’ve been billed unfairly, some have managed to get their money back. You can reach out to Power Tel at 020 341 3227 or drop them an email at sales@powertel[####]. It's also a good idea to report it to Ofcom.

Got a voicemail on my landline from a caravan site, they asked me to call back this number. Tried calling, but couldn’t get through at all. The message said to ring 118023, so I dialled it and waited for ages - like 22 seconds - but no one picked up. Then I noticed I’d been hit with a £5.96 fee! I emailed their customer support asking why I got charged when there was no answer, but they haven’t been any help at all. Really frustrating.

We've noticed a charge of £7.10 for a call to this number, but we have no recollection of making that call. We're currently using BT for our phone services. Can anyone shed some light on this situation?

I ended up calling this number without knowing it was dodgy. It only hit me later that it was a scam. I reckon they’re gonna try and nick about six quid off me on the next bill or something like that.

I was hit with a bill of £7.10 for a mere 27 seconds! I've got no clue how I ended up dialling that number, and honestly, I'm not overly curious either - it's just another number that seems out of my reach. It feels like I've been completely taken for a ride! What options do I have to address this situation?

I've recently spotted two brief calls, lasting just 2 seconds each, on my BT bill for this month, racking up a whopping £14.40. It feels utterly outrageous! After browsing through others’ experiences, it appears this sort of thing is all too common, and actually lodging a complaint to reclaim your cash seems like an uphill battle. What a right mess!

I tried calling 118 023 for some directory info but ended up waiting ages. Thought it might be quicker but nope, took forever just to get the details I needed. Not sure if it’s always like this, but I wouldn’t bother again unless I have no other option. The service felt slow and a bit frustrating honestly.

I’ve noticed a charge of £8.77 on my BT statement for a call lasting just over a minute. The problem is, I didn’t make that call! I’ve spent over an hour and a half trying to sort this out with BT’s customer service, and still no sign of a refund. At sixty-nine, I’ve been a loyal BT customer for half a century and have never had any issues like this. It’s quite frustrating, to say the least. Cheers!

I’ve had repeated dealings with 118 023 for my directory enquiries. Each time I’ve contacted them, I found their service fairly reliable. It's a bit of a hassle having to call multiple times, but I appreciate the information they provide. It’s truly handy when you're on the hunt for contact details, even if it's not always smooth sailing!

This number 118 023 kept popping up when I was trying to find a phone number. Looks like it's part of some directory enquiries service. I wasn’t sure if I should call it back but seems like it’s just for checking phone contacts. Just wanted to share in case anyone else gets calls from 118 023 and wonders who it is. Probably best to be cautious though!

Just got a “final bill” off BT sayin I called 118023, but I never did that call. They say the call lasted like 0.08 seconds and charged me £7.09 for it. Anyone know how I can get this charge taken off and get my money back? Really need help with this.

I’ve just noticed that BT has taken £7.09 from my account for a call lasting only three seconds, which I’m certain I didn’t place. It's a bit perplexing, isn’t it? One can't help but wonder why the authorities haven't taken a firmer stance against these unscrupulous businesses. It feels like they’re just allowed to carry on their dodgy dealings without any repercussions. Surely, it’s high time for action to be taken against these dishonest traders!

On the 23rd of January, my wife picked up a missed call on our landline, not thinking much of it at the time. However, when we checked our online bill later, we were rather taken aback to see a charge of £6.64 for a call lasting about a minute. Upon contacting Plus Net, I was informed that this was a BT directory inquiry, which led me to reach out to BT directly. To my dismay, I was told that the charge originated from Plus Net. It feels quite like being tossed from pillar to post, and I’d appreciate any guidance on this matter. As pensioners, we find this unexpected cost rather burdensome and unfair.

I recently spotted a charge of £11.40 on my phone statement related to this number. Decided to ring NRS Healthcare after seeing a contact slip that was left at my mother-in-law's place. However, the number printed was clearly WRONG! Instead, I got directed to 118023, which seems to be one of those automated directory services. Ultimately, that led me to the right number for NRS Healthline. Just a word of caution - they don't mention that it’s a premium rate line; my call barely lasted a minute, and I was hit with that hefty charge!
