I tried ringing a petrol station in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, using 01945 450222, a number found on both the Shell and Spar store finders. Instead of reaching them, I got a recorded voice saying the number isn’t active anymore and can be purchased by contacting [email protected]. After that, the message advised calling directory enquiries on "118 023", warning that it costs £6.98 a minute plus your usual phone provider's network fees. Seems like this Power Tel business is connected to the 118 023 directory service.

Got a voicemail on my landline from a caravan site, they asked me to call back this number. Tried calling, but couldn’t get through at all. The message said to ring 118023, so I dialled it and waited for ages - like 22 seconds - but no one picked up. Then I noticed I’d been hit with a £5.96 fee! I emailed their customer support asking why I got charged when there was no answer, but they haven’t been any help at all. Really frustrating.

I noticed this number showed up on my BT bill, with a charge of £8.779 for just 1.27 mins. I never made this call. I spent about an hour and twenty-five mins on the phone with BT (their India call centre) trying to sort it out, but no luck getting my money back. I’m 69, been with BT for fifty years and this is the first time I’ve had a problem like this. Bit disappointing.

On 23rd January, my partner picked up a missed call on our phone but didn’t think much of it. However, when checking our online bill, we noticed a £6.64 charge for roughly a minute. I rang Plusnet to sort it out, and they said it was from a BT directory number and suggested I get in touch with them. But when I rang BT, they told me Plusnet applied the charge. Spotted a charge of £11.40 on my phone bill after trying to ring NRS Healthcare. My mother in law got a note from them with their contact, but the number was wrong! When I dialled, I got an automated message pointing me to 118023, which seems like some kind of unmanned directory service. That then linked me to the right NRS Healthline number. Watch out though, as they never mention it’s a premium rate call. I was only on the line for less than a minute and still got stung.
