I saw a missed call from ‭0116 353 3879‬ and decided to call it back. When I did, a recorded message came on saying the number isn’t active anymore and asked me to ring 0118918 instead. Good thing I looked this number up online first.

Sometimes when you ring the wrong number, an out of order line, or a line that won’t take calls, you get told to ring this number instead.

This is basically a directory enquiry service, like other 118 numbers. It’s not trying to rip you off, but if you stay on the phone for ages and let them connect your calls, your phone bill could get quite big. Best to just jot down the right number when they say it and hang up quickly.

Had a missed call from 01162196695 so I called back only to get a message saying the number’s no longer active and to hang up and call 118018 instead. Just moments before I got that call! Looked up 118018 online and it charges over £2 a minute. Totally feels like a scam - just ripping off honest folks who work hard. Feels like they’re using dead numbers just to make money from callback charges... but surely that’s against the law, right?

I got a random call from 01162192607 on my phone, but they didn’t leave any voicemail. When I tried ringing them back with my number blocked, the recording said the number isn’t active anymore and told me to use 118048 instead, mentioning that it might be expensive to call. Quite odd!

Be careful, this is a dodgy scam. The first call came from 01628240873 and it was just a hang-up. But when I checked on 1471, it showed that number and said it’s based in Maidenhead. I tried calling it back and got a message saying the number’s not in service anymore. My advice is don’t ring 118 018 - it’s a total rip-off. They charge you at least £2 just to connect, then £2 a minute on top, plus whatever your phone company charges. Seriously, avoid calling those numbers.

Got a call from 01491 433521 earlier, but as soon as I tried to ring back, it just clicked off and then said the number wasn’t active anymore. Tried checking with 118018 and turns out it’s one of those dodgy premium numbers. Absolutely a scam, so I’d steer clear. People running these should seriously be put behind bars.

If you ring the main number for our building, it plays a message saying that the number you called isn't active anymore. Then it tells you to hang up and call 118018 instead, warning you the cost is £2 per minute. This is set up through some smart divert thingy with a pin code, but the pin was changed and now no one knows what it actually is.

I got a ring from 02886003117 on my phone, showing Cookstown number. When I picked up, no one said anything. Tried calling back and it said the number’s disconnected and to dial 118018 instead. That seemed dodgy to me since the number clearly worked when they called me. I haven’t bothered calling 118018 though.

On the 11th of January, a call to 118 018 lasted about 11 and a half minutes and I've been billed £24.534 for it. I honestly can't remember making that call and have no idea why I'm being charged like this. Tried to figure it out but it’s got me stumped.

I got charged £13.20 just for being on hold for 4 minutes by that Irish band Boyzone! It’s ridiculous how they nickel and dime people across the UK like this. Then when I asked for a refund, no chance of getting my money back. Anyone else fed up with this nonsense? It feels like being forced to pay for something you don’t want, like some kind of free terrorism or extortion.

Don't bother with 118018, it's a scam from Ireland supposedly raising cash for terrorism! When I rang, an automated message said to call a number charging £1 a minute. I waited on the line for about four minutes and no one answered, yet I got charged £13.20. My landline company said they can't refund me and basically couldn't care less. Proper rip off.

Don't fall for this, it's definitely a scam. The calls come from an Irish call centre, you can tell because the people answering have proper Irish accents and say they're based in Ireland. If you try to make a complaint, they'll just give you an email that ends with 11890.ie - that’s actually a directory enquiry firm in Ireland. Total dodgy setup.

Today, BT billed me for phoning a number I never actually dialled. I was absolutely furious as I knew I hadn’t called it. After a long dispute where they insisted I had, my partner noticed the call occurred exactly when I was trying to ring our local police. When I rang them, the message said the number was no longer active and to hold on while being transferred to the right department. Unbeknownst to me, the call was redirected through 118018, which ended up costing me £16. As I pay BT by direct debit, the money was taken straight from my account and they refused to refund me. I had been ringing to report a hit-and-run incident, and instead I got stung and felt cheated by what felt like the authorities. It’s left me really wary about using my phone now.

Someone called me claiming to be from the NHS and Bedford Council, then started asking if I’d been involved in any car crashes over the last couple of years. The call came from a Bedford number, 01234600377. When I tried ringing it back to check who it was, the line said the number wasn’t active and the voice told me to call 118018 instead. Strange behaviour!

I was trying to contact the community outpatients for the NHS, but the number I had wouldn't connect. Instead, they gave me a 118018 number to call. What’s happening with this? Had a right run-around with BT myself! Called their office in central Mumbai, but the bloke there just shut me down and insisted I cough up. Now I’ve lost nearly £70! This feels like a proper rip-off from BT. Tried sorting it out through their online chat, and the person told me to reach out to those 118 people?? What on earth? Then they had the nerve to ask me not to complete the survey, saying my issue wasn’t resolved yet... but nothing was done. Seriously, this sort of thing needs sorting because it’s just a bloody scam!

My mum and dad, who are quite old, tried ringing a catalogue called Easylife Group using this 0844 441 8448 number (it’s supposed to be their support line). When they called, they got told that the number no longer works and were told to use 118018 instead. Now, they’ve ended up getting charged on their TalkTalk bill - 14p for the first 0844 call and a whopping £25.50 for the 118018 one, just to order some stuff from the catalogue. It seems a bit unfair because the catalogue mostly sells mobility aids, clearly aimed at older people, and judging by the other reviews here, a few folks have had the same issue. Honestly, I think something should be done about this firm's phone charges.

I just got hit with a £51.43 bill for a 25-minute call to 118018 - seriously, where's that even from? Now I’m stuck wondering who I can phone without racking up another massive charge like this. I’ve already ditched BT and honestly, I’ll never use them again just on principle.

I just got charged by Talktalk for a call to the number 118018, with a reference code SC079, which apparently lasted 3.04 minutes on the 12th of January 2016. The cost came to £6.44. I honestly have no idea when or why I would have called that number!

Who actually gives permission for these calls to be intercepted? Shouldn't the Proceeds of Crime Act come into play here? Reading the comments here worries me, especially since BT seems to be billing for calls to 118018 even when the number hasn’t been dialled - which just happened to me a few minutes ago (Tuesday afternoon, 19/1/16). When I got the message on my mobile, I double-checked using my landline to see if it was just a mobile network scam. Neither time did I ring 118018. Now I’m stuck trying to figure out how to reach the number I was originally after.

Dad’s BT phone bill came through way more expensive than normal. When I looked into it, there was a call on 22nd December 2015 to 118018 lasting 4 minutes, costing £8.43. Problem is, he never made that call. He’s blind, mostly stuck at home, and only uses the phone to chat with family or ring his doctor. I’m definitely going to raise this with BT.

On the 23rd of December there are two calls logged on my bill to this number, one at 9.43 lasting 13 seconds costing £2.08, and another at 9.44 for 2 minutes 10 seconds costing £4.57. Then on the 22nd December there’s two more calls, one at 18.00 for 40 seconds and another at 18.09 for 22 seconds, both costing £2.08 each. I never dialled these numbers myself but they show up on my detailed bill from TalkTalk. I'm 77 years old and it's pretty worrying to think someone could’ve used my phone without permission and run up these charges. Thankfully it’s not an outrageous amount like £122 but still concerning.

My BT phone bill showed three calls to 118018, costing me £21.55. I called BT to find out why my bill was so expensive and they said it was because of those three calls. I told them I never dialled that number, I thought it was just a directory service. They insisted I had to pay since the calls came from my landline. They did mention they’d keep an eye on my calls though. I told them whatever, I’m not paying for calls I didn’t place. I’m planning to speak with someone on Monday who actually makes sense.

I've had a couple of calls from 01622480262, and they kept asking for me. Problem is, I don’t even live at that address - it’s my partner’s mum’s place! I have no real connection to the house, so how on earth did they get that I visit there? Worried about where they got my number, I decided to ring them back. It was just an automated message telling me to ring 118018. Then I tried 110018, expecting something useful, but all they said was there was a fault on the line and to try again later. After reading some stories online, I’m definitely not calling again. If these dodgy calls end up costing me a fortune, well, fair enough, those scammers deserve it! Total scum!

I recently found a charge on my bill for calling this number. I was trying to ring an 08 number which I thought had been updated. When I dialled it, there was a recorded message telling me to phone a different number instead. On Tuesday 16th December at 11:38, I noticed a charge on my BT phone bill from 01992 2208000. After that, there was a call to 118018 that cost me £1.65, then another call back to the same 01992 number. I never made these calls myself.
