At first, I was sure it was a scam after seeing what’s written here, but I decided to ring Smile Fraud on 159 myself and they verified it was genuinely them. I did tell them how annoyed I was though, since it would be way better if they always used their actual phone number so folks can recognise they’re legit!

Received a text asking me to ring this number. When I phoned back using the number on the back of my debit card, Co-op verified it was legit.

It seems this call was supposedly from Smile / Co-op Bank, claiming to be related to anti-fraud measures. It had that eerie synthetic voice and felt very scripted, so I decided to end the conversation promptly. I then called the bank directly to verify, and they confirmed they hadn't reached out to me at all. It certainly appears to be a phishing attempt.

Got a call from someone claiming to be Co-op Bank fraud team, sounded like a robotic voice. When they started asking stuff past just confirming my name, I just ended the call. I rang the bank directly afterwards and they said there was no alert or reason for that call. Definitely thinks to be a phishing scam in my opinion.
