Like others have said, I got one of those robocalls about supposed tax fraud. I’m on PAYE with the government, so HMRC sorts my tax stuff already. We all know scammers can fake any phone number they want. HMRC always includes a unique reference number if they really need to get in touch. The call I got was total rubbish, so I just ended it straight away.

ABSOLUTELY NOT HMRC! Don’t get tricked by these numbers 0300 200 3884 or 0300 200 3859. I got a call saying I owed PAYE, but I knew I didn’t. The person on the phone got a bit pushy, so I told them to send me a letter. I then checked with my accountant who said nothing was due, and when I phoned HMRC myself using the official number from the gov.uk site, they confirmed I owed nothing. It doesn't matter if this is from a real underpayment, an error in your RTI info, or a missed credit - your record shows a balance owed. Just thinking your account is fine and not answering won’t do any good. Turns out, it really is HMRC. The adviser told me my last payment was missing the right allocation reference.
