03002003838 Summary (Read all comments)

Phone number ☎️ 03002003838 👆 is reported as a genuine HMRC VAT debt management number used to contact businesses or sole traders regarding outstanding VAT payments or returns. While some users confirm it as a legitimate official line, others warn about scam calls spoofing the number, often with aggressive messages demanding immediate action or threatening arrest. HMRC typically follows up with written communication, so unsolicited calls requesting urgent payment or personal information should be treated cautiously. To verify authenticity, experts recommend contacting HMRC directly via official channels or their VAT helpline before responding. Security checks asked during calls involve basic identity confirmation, never bank details. Ignoring genuine HMRC VAT debt calls may lead to formal demands or debt collection action.

Got a call on my work landline from someone claiming to be the HMRC VAT department. They left a message with a ref number and a phone number to ring them back. Since I’m not VAT registered, I asked my accountant if he’d had any contact, but he hadn’t. He told me to just ignore it because HMRC would send a letter, not call and leave vague messages with ref numbers. Also had a couple of calls and messages on my mobile too, didn’t bother answering any of those.

Got a call from what looked like an HMRC number about a payment they'd apparently not got yet, even though it had been sorted on time. They left a voicemail with a deadline to ring them back. I waited on hold for about 15 minutes only to get told to just disregard the call! Bit dodgy going after money that was definitely paid, even if it was slightly late from their side. Definitely felt like a cheeky move from HMRC.

Just got a call from this number telling me to press 1 or I'll be arrested for fraud. Turns out it was a fake HMRC number! They're spoofing their calls, don't fall for it!

Got a call from 0300200 0274 earlier with a robotic voice telling me I’m being charged with tax fraud or something and to press 1 to sort it out or else I’d get arrested right away. Totally didn’t buy it, I didn’t press anything. Definitely feels like one of those dodgy scam calls.

I saw a missed call from this number and decided to look it up here before calling back. Turns out it’s linked to bankruptcy details in Scotland and apparently people have been spoofing it too. Seems like a dodgy situation definitely not legit.

So this HMRC VAT lot kept ringing me about a bill I’d already sorted. Proper cheeky of them, honestly.

I got a call from 0300 200 3884 and they left a voicemail with a ref number, telling me to ring 0300 200 3838 before 5pm. Then, just a couple of minutes later, I got another call from someone else asking to speak to the Director. Thing is, I sold my business over two years back, so I was pretty sure it was dodgy. I looked up both numbers online but couldn’t get a clear answer. So, I ended up contacting HMRC through their web chat and gave them both numbers. Turns out it’s legit - these are official calls about unpaid VAT debts. Best not to ignore them!

I gave them a ring and got put on hold, so I ended up hanging up. There was this automated security thing that asked for info you could easily find out. Then I got through to someone who asked if I wanted to make a payment. When I said no, they just put me on hold again. I reckon I'll try calling the main number next.

Real HMRC Debt Management folks dealing with companies and sole traders registered for VAT (even if they’ve deregistered). The callback number might not always be the same since each office uses different lines. If you’re unsure, just ring the VAT helpline and ask to be put through to the VAT Debt Management team to check if they’ve tried to get in touch with you.

I got a call from 03002003884, and they told me to ring back on 0300200838, but it was definitely a scam! Then, while I was on the office phone with them, the Managing Director was actually on the line with the genuine HMRC, who said they hadn’t made any calls. So obvious it’s dodgy. Be careful and never share your details with these numbers.

A number 03002003884 rang me but I didn’t pick up. Then I got a voicemail from a person who didn’t say their name, saying it was HMRC trying to reach someone else - maybe my nephew. They told me to call them back by Monday at the latest using the number 03002003838. When I looked up both numbers online, lots of people mentioned they're scams, though a few said it might be about unpaid VAT. Thing is, neither me nor my nephew have ever been self-employed or run a business.

DON’T THINK THIS IS SOME SORT OF SCAM! I get that lots of folks reckon it might be, but honestly, it’s not at all. This number’s linked to HMRC and they contact you if you’ve got unpaid VAT or a VAT return you haven’t sent off yet. If you choose to not answer, you’ll probably start getting official letters about the debt, and eventually, it could go to a debt collection agency. I found this out after I missed a call from them and called back because I knew I owed some VAT. They spoke directly about my outstanding tax. It’s not a dodgy third party pretending to be HMRC - it’s actually them. So, seriously, don’t just ignore calls from this number.

This isn’t a scam, it’s an official number for HMRC’s VAT debt team. They just need to verify who they’re speaking to, to make sure it’s the right person. Imagine if you owed a huge VAT bill and HMRC started discussing it with your partner or someone who doesn’t work there - that wouldn’t be proper at all! They need to run through some ID checks to confirm they’re dealing with the director or company secretary. The questions are pretty straightforward too, like your name, address and phone. They’d never ask for bank details or anything like that to verify your identity. So yeah, it’s completely legit!

Got a call from 0300 2003838 today, a bloke called Chris claiming to be from HMRC. He asked for my personal info to "check security". I told him I’ve never had a call from HMRC on my mobile before, so how do I know it's legit? When I mentioned HMRC usually sends a letter first, he just said "Alright then, have a good day" and hung up. Definitely felt dodgy to me.
