Received a call today from a woman with a foreign accent, saying she wanted to talk about our corporation tax. I told her I wasn’t convinced the call was genuine, but she insisted it was. I got a voicemail from this number today, and a few days ago, I had one from 0300 200 3884 that sounded pretty much the same. They said they were from the HMRC corporation tax team and asked the company director to get in touch. The message today mentioned the corporation tax reference number, whereas the earlier one gave the UTR number. Problem is, I’m not a company owner at all.

This isn't a scam, the number actually belongs to HMRC for Corporation Tax payments that are overdue. You can find it right on the official HMRC site under their contact details! I tried to share the link but the comments won't let me, so just do a quick Google search of the number and the top result will be HMRC for sure. Got a voicemail from a bloke with a northern accent on my phone - the call was from a private number. So I dialled the number she gave me, 03003227831, but a bloke with a Scottish accent answered saying that the number had changed to the one she initially called from. Thing is, I’ve had no letters or emails from HMRC at all, so I thought this might be a con. I called back, and at first it sounded legit, but then the guy I spoke to, who was quite convincing, started saying I owed taxes from 2016-17 and 2017-18. Just a heads up, this scam is pretty clever - their automated message warns about fraud while you wait, and they even play the same music HMRC uses on hold!
