Received a call today from a woman with a foreign accent, saying she wanted to talk about our corporation tax. I told her I wasn’t convinced the call was genuine, but she insisted it was. I got a voicemail from this number today, and a few days ago, I had one from 0300 200 3884 that sounded pretty much the same. They said they were from the HMRC corporation tax team and asked the company director to get in touch. The message today mentioned the corporation tax reference number, whereas the earlier one gave the UTR number. Problem is, I’m not a company owner at all.

This isn't a scam, the number actually belongs to HMRC for Corporation Tax payments that are overdue. You can find it right on the official HMRC site under their contact details! I tried to share the link but the comments won't let me, so just do a quick Google search of the number and the top result will be HMRC for sure. Seriously, it's not that complicated, Google isn’t exactly new tech!

This morning at precisely 08:13, I received a rather peculiar call from this number. The voicemail message, which included my name, was left by a woman with a Northern Irish accent. She urged me to ring back the number 0300 200 3840 by 5pm on Monday. When I called the number, it was a bit strange as every option presented was simply “press 1”. Upon speaking to the individual who answered, they claimed to be from HMRC. Feeling a bit dubious, I decided to reach out to HMRC directly using their official contact number. They confirmed that the call wasn’t from them at all, and I've subsequently reported this on the .gov website.

Got a voicemail from a bloke with a northern accent on my phone - the call was from a private number.
