Phone number ☎️ 03002003831 👆 is reported as a number frequently linked to sophisticated HMRC VAT scams. Fraudsters send convincingly official-looking letters and make automated calls threatening arrest, demanding immediate payment of fictitious VAT debts. Despite some callers using the genuine HMRC number, criminals often spoof it to appear authentic. Recipients often find errors in names or addresses and amounts owed that don’t match their records. Genuine HMRC rarely calls first and, if concerned, individuals are advised to directly contact HMRC through trusted official channels. Never disclose personal or bank details when called, and always verify suspicious communications independently. Reporting such incidents to HMRC and local authorities is essential to combat these scams and protect vulnerable people from financial harm.

Received a call from 0300203831 claiming they were from HMRC about some VAT issue. Has anyone else had this? I’m a bit suspicious, sounds dodgy to me. Just want to check if it’s for real or just a scam going around!

I got two letters through the post, one supposedly from HMRC and the other from VAT Debt Management, both referencing this phone number. They looked really convincing, even used those official brown HMRC envelopes that made it seem so legit. When I rang the number, I had to go through loads of departments and was left on hold for about an hour and a half - felt exactly like dealing with the actual tax office. They claimed I was VAT registered and owed a massive £27,068.58. Seriously, don’t ring them! Just ignore it!

Got a letter that looked pretty legit at first. I decided to double-check the reference number online and it didn’t match, so I looked up the phone number here. Turns out it’s a total scam. I almost got caught out, and I normally think I’m quite sharp when it comes to spotting these things.

This number shows up on fake letters about VAT debts saying you owe money. Weirdly, the amounts they mention are actually right for what’s due or was due before - defo looks like HMRC has had a leak or some data got out somehow.

After my company was dissolved, we got a couple of letters claiming we owed £28,000 in VAT supposedly from "HMRC." The number they gave to call back was 0300 200 3831. I’m planning to ring HMRC proper tomorrow to see if these letters are legit or just a scam.

My neighbour keeps getting letters meant for me, claiming I owe VAT to HMRC and telling me to ring 03002003831. I even got contacted by a so-called debt agency demanding payment. When I tried calling them, no one answered, and they just sent emails asking for all my personal info but never gave any names or direct phone numbers. I refused to cooperate. I’ve reported everything to HMRC and the police because it’s clearly a scam. They’ve registered a company in my name but used my neighbour’s address. Don’t get caught out by this!

Today we received a letter that pretends to be from HMRC - but we’re both employed, not self-employed, plus the name on it is totally wrong and it’s actually addressed to my neighbour who lives just across the street! Surely a scam, because when you Google the number it’s not legit at all.

This number is definitely a scam pretending to be HMRC. They even got my name wrong on the letter, but it looks pretty legit at first glance. The crooks have actually registered a business under my name so now there’s some fake VAT debt. I’m receiving official letters from HMRC alongside the scam ones. HMRC have now passed my case to their fraud department to sort it out.

I got a letter saying it was from HMRC telling me to call 03002003831, though there was a mistake in the letter, it seemed real enough. I decided to call a number I already knew for HMRC, and found out the letter was fake. From what I hear, HMRC are aware of these scams but arent really taking proper action. Best advice - don’t phone the number on the letter or visit any website it mentions.

This has got to be a scam number pretending to be HMRC. They keep saying I owe £15,000 in VAT which there's no way is true. The rest of the stuff they sent (a letter) looks quite believable apart from them spelling my name wrong. Be careful!

This number really is from HMRC regarding VAT, but usually they don’t call folks directly, they send letters instead. If you get a call from this number, just tell them you’ll ring them back. Then head straight to hmrc.gov.uk and find the official VAT contact number to check it’s legit. Scammers often spoof real numbers to trick people. However, if you ring the official number yourself, even if it’s the same one that called, you’ll get through to the proper department. Scammers only have control when they’re the ones making the initial call.

The people making these calls often switch up which numbers they use. To assist with our checks, try to dial 1471 right after you get a dodgy call, if you can - and jot down the number that comes up (standard geographic call rates might apply). If you haven’t already, please send full details of the scam by email to [email protected]. Be sure to include:
* When you got the call (date and time)
* The number shown by dialling 1471, if it appeared
* Your own phone number
* A short summary of what the call was about
We might need to share your email and phone details with other agencies in order to put a stop to the scam.
It could also be worth ringing your phone company to ask if they can investigate or block any suspicious numbers for you (though not every provider does this, and some might charge).

Just got a call like this too. The first time I picked up, there was nobody on the line so I ended up hanging up. Then they called back almost immediately and some automated voice started talking about a tax fraud issue, warning me I’d be arrested if I didn’t hit 1. Definitely going to report this to the proper authorities - it's probably aimed at those who are more vulnerable and could really cause them harm. If anyone else has experienced this, make sure you report it as well so they can put an end to it ASAP.
