Beware, it’s a SCAM! Make sure you report every scam call or text to the police fraud system. Just search for ‘action fraud’ on Google and head to the ‘police.uk’ website. There’s a section called ‘report a phishing attempt’ - read all the info carefully, then fill out the details of the scam. If you have any links or web addresses related to it, include those too. You don’t need to sign up or give personal info unless you’ve actually lost money to the scam. The police can only get a clear picture of how widespread these scams are if everyone reports them.

I asked who they were working for and how they got my phone number, also how they couldn’t possibly know I might need something like that. After a long pause, I just hung up. Felt like it was some dodgy scam to me.

There’s a couple comments below explaining how to put a stop to these scam calls. It’s a bit of a hassle, but I’ve managed to do it by reporting every dodgy call and text to the police’s online system (I’ve bookmarked the page for quick access). Thing is, it’s going to need loads of people doing the same before any real change kicks in. Loads of folks are flagging scam numbers here daily. My MP did reply, which was nice, but honestly, it’s going to take a whole lot more than just one person raising the issue to make a difference.

Today I got a phone call from someone speaking with a Bristol/South West accent, offering a free medical alert pendant for emergencies like falls. When I asked how they got my landline number, they kept dodging the question and didn’t give a straight answer. I then asked if it was some kind of insurance scam, but again they avoided replying properly and just stuck to their script. They wanted to know my age and medical info! After I pushed back, they suddenly stopped pressing for my details. This is definitely a scam. Don’t engage, just hang up and say you’ll report them to the police! It’s a nasty trick, trying to fool people - especially the elderly or vulnerable. Hope this warning helps anyone who gets a call from this number.

Got a call earlier from someone saying they were with a Medical Alert monitoring centre in Dorset. They told me I was eligible for an emergency alert pendant, supposedly because some organisation had passed on my details. When I asked which organisation that was, they wouldn’t say. Then I asked for a manager and the caller just hung up. I looked up “Medical Alert monitoring centre Dorset” and found plenty of scam warnings. I then called 01970607738 and got an automated message from something called Philitastica alert services, with an option to speak to a real person. A woman answered, said she worked for Philitastica market research centre, but wouldn’t give me any company details or their office address. Google showed Philitastica is actually based in the Philippines and does marketing calls for other companies. Their live chat doesn’t seem to be staffed, so seems like a scam to get your email and then spam you. As this site says the number belongs to Gamma Telecom Holdings, reporting abuse to them might help stop these annoying calls.
