Someone rang me pretending to be from O2, saying they had a discount offer, and sent a text while I was still on the call. The message looked legit, coming from ‘O2’ and included a passcode along with a warning not to share it with anyone, even O2 staff, as they’d never ask for it. The person on the line kept pushing me to give them the code to apply a 45% discount to my account, but I didn’t hand it over since it went against what the text had said. After I refused, he just said goodbye nicely. I’ve passed all this on to O2’s fraud department. Definitely a scam!

Parading as Carphone Warehouse, they certainly had me on the hook for a moment. I provided them with a dummy email to gather more details, and while they crafted an impressive façade for their promotional mumbo jumbo, the fact that it was supposedly from 'Carphone Werehouse' was a bit of a tell. The caller was unfailingly courteous, yet I couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy-someone must have sucked the life out of them. Quite the sad state of affairs, really.

SCAM ALERT! Make sure to report every scam call or message straight to the police fraud system. Just search for ‘action fraud’ and head over to the ‘police.uk’ website. Find the section about ‘reporting phishing attempts’ and carefully read all the info provided. After that, fill out the form with the scam details, including any links or web addresses you have. You don’t need to sign up or give personal info unless you’re saying you’ve lost cash due to fraud. When I told him I’d just renewed and had two years left, he wouldn’t accept it and kept calling back.
