Stay clear! Total scam! Got a text claiming to be from Halifax saying my debit card had been used online and to ring a number. I spoke to a man who said he was from Halifax and asked for my card info for security reasons. Felt fishy so I hung up and called the number on the back of my real card. Halifax fraud dept confirmed those texts and that phone number were fake!

I got a text from Halifax saying someone had tried to take money from my account and asking me to confirm if it was me. I replied that it wasn’t, and they told me to call this number saying it was the fraud team. Rather than call straight away, I checked Halifax’s website for the fraud team number, and it matched the one in the text. I called, and the lady I spoke to was really kind and helpful. Turns out there was an attempt to withdraw money, but she stopped it from going through. They also sent me a new card quickly. Proper excellent service!

However, not long after, we found our card had been declined due to a perplexing referral code. We reached out to Abbey Direct and were connected to their fraud team, who informed us that there was an attempt to withdraw £1000 online! They've promptly frozen our card and are issuing a replacement. I rang Halifax using a number I trust to check up on this one. They weren’t very helpful or bothered to assist much. They did tell me when they last contacted me, but it didn’t line up with these calls. I asked if they’d look into this number and they just said loads of calls pretend to be from Halifax, so just stick to the number on the back of your card. Indeed, it was definitely Abbey! I had the pleasure of reaching out to them earlier today regarding our card being put on hold. They just wanted to verify that the recent transactions were indeed ours, which thankfully they were. All sorted now, but the manner in which they approached customer communication was rather questionable, if I'm honest! Nevertheless, it was Abbey for sure!

When we reached out to Abbey, the operator at the overseas call centre asked if we’d had any prior notice concerning this, suggesting those involved might have abandoned the account. My partner received a call regarding a ring and it was a recorded message stating that the item is with Abbey’s scam department. The ring is meant for me, and we were prompted to press any key. I received a call this afternoon from this number asking for some details, including the spelling of my name and my date of birth. I went ahead and confirmed this information as they claimed to be representing Abbey. However, they went on to say that my account had been deactivated and that I needed to pay £50 to rectify the situation. We were quite taken aback, and I made it clear that we only pay by cheque, not via direct debit over the phone. They then refused to accept a cheque and abruptly hung up on me. Got a text from this number saying my Halifax card ending in **** was charged for NetPlay TV. It asked me to reply ‘yes’ if it was me or ‘no’ if it wasn't. I just said ‘no’ without really thinking. Later on, I remembered I don’t even have a Halifax card or those digits match mine. They told me to ring them back on that number, but I’m just ignoring it now. Definitely a scam.

Indeed, it’s a dodgy operation. Today alone, we received five calls from them, prompting us to reach out to Abbey’s customer support. The representative we spoke to assured us that the number in question bears no connection whatsoever to them, and there’s no record of it within any of their scam monitoring systems. He even looked up the number we provided, and confirmed that if it were legitimate, it would appear on Abbey’s website.
