I received a pre-recorded message for PP| that rambled on quite a bit, only to eventually instruct me to press "5" for more details. Strangely, there wasn't any option to cancel, and they didn't provide any identification either. Quite peculiar!

We initially suspected it might be PPI, but it turns out it’s actually about debt management. When we hit "5," a pleasant young lady answered the line. The company in question was Moneysavers.

I work in an office and the number I'd given out is for my workplace, no idea how they got hold of it. For anyone fed up with those irritating spam calls, I'd suggest checking out www.ico.org.uk. They can actually fine companies that keep pestering folks with unwanted, unsolicited calls. If enough of us report these jokers, they might end up needing some advice on their own debts! Although, I doubt it’d make much difference in the end :)

If you’ve been rung up out of the blue by 08438320119 and just got an automated message, it’s worth giving the ICO a bell on 0303 123 1113 to report it. This sort of cold call shouldn’t be taking place without your consent. The ICO starts looking into it after enough people report the same number, so your call helps. Also, don’t bother pressing any numbers they mention to opt out - it’s often just a trick to confirm your number is active, which can lead to even more calls.

When you’re unable to block a number, try saving it as a contact with a name that makes it clear you shouldn’t bother answering. Then, put a silent ringtone on that contact. After that, you can just totally disregard any calls from them.

I had a pay as you go phone with Orange, hardly used it except for emergencies. Then these random calls started coming through, once or twice a week at first, so I just ignored them - pretty irritating honestly. After a while, they began leaving voice messages which cost me like 50p a go to listen to. That got ridiculous, so I stopped checking them altogether. Eventually, I was ignoring calls and messages all the time, until one day my son was trying to get hold of me in a real emergency and I just ignored him. Can you imagine how awful that felt? I’m not saying the number mentioned here was the one in that situation, but this number keeps ringing me every week and it's driving me mad. Hidden numbers and cold calls really should be illegal!
