Here’s a little trick I picked up: When your phone rings, just pick up but don’t say a word, then tuck it straight back into your pocket - the call’s still live, but on their dime. Just don’t ring them back! They tend to stop phoning after a bit with that number. This works well for 0845, 0800 and hidden numbers. Also, take a minute to block those numbers. It’s a shame there’s so many daft people wasting their time with cold calls or scams! I wonder if Alexander Bell imagined the headaches his “clever” telephone would bring when he invented it.

I found this number, 0800 138 7153, on the Baines and Ernst website - they’re debt advisers. I just gave them a call and told them to remove me from their contact lists and to stop calling me. Let’s wait and see if they actually do it!

All you can do is hit 5 for a package, which I did. Then if you ask who they are or tell them to take your number off, they just end the call straight away. No idea where they got my info from or how to stop it. Properly annoying!

So, yesterday I got a call from someone saying they were from Baines and Brest, dealing with people’s debts. I told them I had two debts unpaid, gave them some details. They said they’d clear the debts and then I’d repay them directly in instalments. Things got weird when they asked for my bank details straight away and wanted payment right then. I said no way as my son had my card and wouldn’t be back till six. I wasn’t shocked to find bad reviews on this number when I looked it up on my laptop. Nearly gave them my bank info but thankfully didn’t. The number was 0161 216 8240 and the caller was Mr Badrulneymar Ahmed. I’ve since cancelled whatever info I gave. What worries me is they have my address and number and I’m clueless where they got them from. Then today a guy called Mr Ian Hickens came by, said he worked for them too. Told him I’m done with it, cancelled everything after seeing the bad feedback. Has anyone else managed to get through to that number?

Just had a phone call that ended before I could pick up, probably hoping I’d call back a premium rate number. Honestly, someone from the government really needs to step in and deal with these nuisances.

So these folks just gave me a ring. Bit silly of me, but I called them back before thinking twice - turned out they might be running a scam. Today I went round to see my daughter because her 3-month-old had a nasty reaction to a vaccination. Just as she managed to settle the baby, the phone started ringing. She answered, but it was one of those automated calls. Later on, when the baby was struggling to get back to sleep, they called again. This time I answered, thinking of complaining and telling them off for bothering a mum and her little one - but again it was an automated message. I thought about calling them back from home, but after reading the comments here, it seems like there’s no way to stop it. If they were waking my son after a 12-hour shift, it could have serious effects on him. It’s really frustrating that nothing can be done to put an end to these annoying calls.

The caller claimed to be from "Sales and Marketing South Africa" and offered an option to "opt out". I reckon it’s a trick to keep you stuck on a costly line trying to unsubscribe from some service you never actually signed up for!
