Turns out this was a total scam. They claimed to be from Track and Trace, telling me and my husband that we’d been near someone who tested positive for the Omicron variant. Because I was showing symptoms, we got PCR tests done which were both negative, but I was still ill and ended up in hospital. I can only imagine how terrified an elderly person with no clue how to verify this would be. These scammers are absolutely horrible. Sorry for the language, but they really deserve a good kicking...

I saw a comment here that suggests some actual steps to take if you want to try and stop these thieves in their tracks. I received a dubious message asserting I’d been in touch with someone who tested positive for Covid, urging me to visit a website to request testing kits. It's clearly a scam since it didn’t come from any official NHS channel.
