They claimed to be HMRC and said there was some fraud issue with me, asking me to press 1 to speak to an agent. So I did press 1. When the guy with an Indian accent answered, I asked him to prove he was really from HMRC. He just ended the call! I actually work for the DWP, and HMRC always sends letters and would probably visit you in person about fraud, not call like this!

Someone phoned me saying they were from HMRC and that I owed them cash, threatening that the police would show up if I didn’t pay. They told me to press one to talk to them. I didn’t. They act like they’re from HMRC and try to scare you with threats of being arrested right away for fake tax debts, demanding payment straight away! Got a call from 03453003949 just after 4pm, I pressed 1 and ended up speaking to a bloke with an American accent. He asked for some info, so I gave him my name, then asked who he was and where he was calling from. He said HMRC and I think he claimed I owed around £1,200. I asked about a letter and mentioned I didn’t believe the call was genuine. He then said I could hang up and wait for the police to come and arrest me. I was about to ask something else when he suddenly cut me off. Honestly, I feel for folks who get frightened and hand over their details or even pay up.

This has got to be a positive sign. If anything comes from social media, it's that HMRC pretty much never rings people up; they always use good old-fashioned letters for any official stuff. These scammers wouldn’t know how to send a real letter even if they gave it a go. Honestly, most of them would be lost if they found themselves in a real emergency. Got a call from this number saying I’d be arrested if I didn’t press 1. I didn’t though, but I’m 75 and it was proper scary even if I’m aware it’s a scam.
