Got a random call from a number I didn’t recognise. I picked up but just left the phone down without saying anything. They hung up after just a few seconds and there was some weird noise, like one of those robo call centres. Next time they ring, I’m just gonna ignore them completely.

Right after I picked up, I was put on hold and a recorded voice kept claiming I was being looked into for tax fraud and there was an arrest warrant out for me. The caller said I owed HMRC £3,450 and offered to sort it out if I paid half right away. She even gave me some kind of reference and police incident numbers. I got a call where after pressing 1, I was passed between three different people who claimed there were 1600 officers ready to arrest me and that I could fix everything right then on the phone. Whenever I asked for proof that they were from HMRC, they put me through to a so-called ‘manager’ who kept changing the number I was supposed to call for verification. At one point, the number was 0300 200 3310, but I pointed out that on the HMRC site the number ends in 3300, not 3310. After that, he just hung up and tried ringing from a number ending in 3300. I then called the actual HMRC line and the first automated message said they don’t accept payments over the phone. These scammers get really aggressive if you ask them for proper confirmation they’re from HMRC. The official HMRC later told me it’s definitely a scam. They claimed I owed £1600 but said they’d accept any amount I had in my bank account, and no, I couldn’t pay using a credit card. The number they used was 0300 200 3948.
