Total scam. I called the number on the site, then rang it again from a different phone and let the HMRC guy on the line listen in. They said that number isn’t one they know of at all. It’s been reported as fake.

So these con artists are using a real HMRC number on your phone so it looks genuine, but it's all fake. They've rung me a couple of times already. The bloke who called had a strong South Asian accent and said his name was Christopher Robinson. He claimed we owed £9,000 right away because of some tax credit overpayment. Trouble is, we've never claimed tax credits in our lives! I just told him to jog on.

I've received two calls recently. The first, from a different number, was insisting I pay money straight away or else I'd face court proceedings. Then this number called, asking to talk to my husband about supposed unpaid money. Funny thing is, this number shows up on the official HMRC Tax Credit site as genuine, but I've heard they can fake numbers now, so it looks like the call is from a real source when it’s not. I flat out told them I knew it was a scam and if they were legit, they should have our accountant's contact and get in touch with him instead.

I got a message telling me to ring this number, so I did, but the person on the other end was really pushy and rude. They kept demanding my personal info before they’d even say what the call was about or where they’d got my phone number from. Feeling a bit uneasy, I gave them some details but stopped before handing over everything. Then I rang the real HMRC number - after waiting more than 40 minutes for someone to pick up - and they had no clue why I’d been told to call that other number. When I asked if that strange number was one of theirs, they said it was similar but not one they recognised. They also told me they hadn’t sent me any recent letters, which was exactly the only question the dodgy caller tried to ask - claiming I’d ignored HMRC correspondence. So, it seems I don’t owe anything and there’s no recent mail from them. My advice: don’t answer or call back that number they sent you, and if you’re unsure, ring HMRC directly using their official contact.

We were convinced this number was some kind of scam, but it turns out it isn’t. I got in touch with the tax credits helpline on 0300 200 3804 - everything there checked out, and they said the 3809 number is legit. They told us we owe £1800 for an overpayment of tax credits from more than three years back. What’s worse is we never got any reminder letters about it because HMRC apparently had a backlog. It’s shocking and pretty upsetting, especially when you expect a proper service from a government office. Running a business while suddenly being hit with a surprise debt from years ago? Totally unmanageable!

A couple days ago I got a call from this number while I was out and about (around 2pm, lasted maybe 2 mins). The person on the other end claimed they were from HMRC and asked for my full name. I told them my name but then wouldn't answer anything else since I wasn’t comfortable sharing personal info over the phone. When I asked what the call was about, they refused to say until I passed some security checks. I told them to maybe call back the next day when I’d be home, if it was genuine. They replied that they couldn’t promise another call but would try. Felt a bit like a game. They insisted it was important I ring them back. But if this is truly from the government, why don’t they just send a letter? Especially when they warn us not to give personal details on calls.
I never got another call.
Is there a way to check if that number is legit? Would hate to miss a real letter from them and not know about it.

Dodgy call - rang by this number today asking for my personal details but I didn’t give anything away. I then called HMRC using a number from their official site, and the person I finally spoke to said this number wasn’t theirs and they hadn’t tried to get in touch with me at all. Definitely a scam.

Thought this was a dodgy call at first, but it was actually legit. Ended up ignoring it and now my debt's been passed on to a collection firm. To top it off, it’s showing up on my credit report! Learned my lesson the hard way.

Just got a letter like this today and I'm convinced it's a scam... I looked up the number on the official HMRC website and it’s not there at all. You should definitely report it to the police. The letter seems authentic at first glance but the paper is really flimsy and cheap, nothing like the quality HMRC usually sends. I've had loads of letters from them before, so I’m certain this isn’t legit.

Got a call earlier today from this number claiming to be from HMRC. They asked me for my full name, NI number, full address, my kids' full names and even my bank details. I only gave my name, then told them I wasn’t comfortable sharing the rest over the phone. When I asked what it was about, they said something about tax credits. I told them I don’t receive any tax credits. They insisted it was important to provide all the info but I said no again and asked if they could send something in writing. They said no, call centre policy and gave me this very number to ring back. My advice: don’t share anything with this number and ring your local tax office directly if you need help.

I got a letter saying this was the number to ring regarding some HMRC debt they claimed I owed. Out of curiosity, I checked my phone bill after calling because suddenly they wanted money for something from 2007. No idea why they’ve decided to chase it now, after so many years. Anyway, I ended up paying over a quid just for being on hold for a bit and never actually spoke with a real person. I had to hang up because I was running late for work, otherwise I reckon they would’ve charged me even more just for waiting. Honestly, my suggestion is to avoid ringing this number. Couple of weeks ago, I got a letter claiming I owe them about £740 from 2008. Then today, another one turned up saying they’re going to pass it on to a debt collection agency and gave me a number to ring. But when I checked my local tax office, the phone number was completely different. I’m really puzzled because I haven’t claimed any tax credits for almost five years, so why now after all this time? The letter had my NI number on it, and the address was something like Miss D Barraclough HMRC DMb 485 BX5 5AB. The phone number on the letter was 0300 200 3809. Honestly, I haven’t got a clue what to do next.
