I just got this letter from DM Tax Credits saying I owe over £3000 because of some supposed Child Tax overpayment from 2016 and 2017. It really shook me up at first. There was a number to call, 03002003805, but when I rang, it just went to an answering machine telling me to call back Monday to Friday - and of course, today’s Saturday. So, I've been getting some letters from a number starting 0300 200 3805 and figured I’d better check it out online. Luckily, I found this site which warned me that number’s been linked to scams. Then I looked up the BX9 1AG postcode on the letters and, surprise surprise, it’s not even real. I’m planning to send the letter over to the official HM Revenue and Customs address to see if I actually owe anything or if it’s just a scam attempt.

0300 200 3805 is definitely HMRC. Don't just block it or let it go to voicemail or you might end up getting chased by a debt collector. If you're a bit iffy about it, ring the number back, tell them your name and postcode, and ask for a bit of your National Insurance number to prove it's legit. It's 100% HMRC.

Received a letter that seemed proper legit, so I gave the number a ring. Had a good chuckle when I found out it was a dodgy scam line. Both calls were answered by the same Scottish lady. If you get letters from HMRC using this number, they are genuine. Just ring the regular tax credits helpline and they can verify if you owe any money. I’d suggest sorting it out soon, or else it might get passed to DWP who’ll either take it from your benefits or deduct it straight from your wages through your employer. It’s from their Debt Management team, the folks who arrange payment plans if you’ve paid too much tax credits. Took me ages - nearly two hours - to realise that! Give it a go and see for yourself.

This scam really caught me off guard, it looked so much like a genuine HMRC letter. It came out of nowhere, so I looked up the phone number on the official HMRC .gov site and then cross-checked it on CAB. On 1-9-2021, I got a letter that sounded pretty legit saying I owed money from TC overpayments, but I looked up this number before reacting. They kept asking for my name and address, saying if I didn’t give it they’d throw me straight in jail. I told them if they know who I am, why the need to threaten me with prison? Just got a letter from HMRC Debt Management saying I've missed a payment on some plan or other. The thing is, I haven't been employed for over two years and have no clue about any debts or payment arrangements with them. Pretty confused about it all.

I got a letter that looked like it was from HM Revenue & Customs saying I’d been overpaid £103.20 in working tax credit. They mentioned they’d already sent me a letter about it, but I have no memory of getting anything before. It was only after showing it to some mates at work that I started suspecting something was off.
The letter was dated 1/2/10 but had my new married surname on it. I got married in December 2010 and stopped claiming tax credits because I didn’t need them anymore. Yet, while I was claiming, they’d be sent under my old name. I’m really relieved I got second opinions on it - it’s a cleverly made scam letter, but it just felt wrong, like there was too much empty space on the page or something. It’s honestly quite frightening how believable these fake letters can be.
Stumbling upon this website has been a lifesaver. I feel at ease now and don’t have to stress about it anymore. Thanks heaps for the help!

Same thing happened to me, got a letter claiming I owe tax credits but luckily about a week ago I phoned tax credits about an old debt and the figures didn’t add up. Thought I’d look it up here and sure enough it’s a scam. And to the muppets saying it’s genuine, buzz off.

The number 0300 200 3805 is definitely from HMRC. I work there and can vouch for it. Still, don’t just trust me blindly - double-check yourself. Head over to Gov.UK, find the helpline number for Tax Credits (which ends with 3900) or the Debt Management team (ending in 1429), and ask them what overpayments are on your account. It’s always best to be cautious, but that number is legit.

The only authentic HMRC contact numbers are Telephone: 0345 300 3900, Textphone: 0345 300 3909, and if you're outside the UK, it's +44 2890 538 192. Genuine emails from them will always have www.gov.uk in the address. If you see anything different, it's probably just scammers pretending to be official to trick you.

Today I got a letter that claimed to be from HMRC, showing the number above. When I called, there were a couple of pauses and then a message telling me to press 1, but after that, it said they were busy. The woman who answered sounded Scottish. I felt suspicious straight away because the letter only mentioned my NI number and addressed me as sir/madam, which doesn’t seem right. Plus, HMRC phone numbers usually start with 0345 from what I know. Finding this website has been a relief, though I’m still thinking about contacting HMRC directly to let them know. Between that and having to claim credits already, it’s stressful enough without bogus letters asking for money back! The letter even had a slip to pay them directly. Hopefully, this info helps others too.

This is legit. Back in 2008 I got paid too much for Working and Child Tax Credits. They sent me a letter asking me to pay it back. The number on the letter is this one. I’ve double checked with HMRC and everything’s proper.

This number is part of a scam tied to letters claiming you owe money to HMRC. Do not call this number. If you get one of these letters, ring HMRC on their official number which you can find online without any trouble.

I recieved a letter saying I owed tax credits from 9 years ago, figured it was a scam at first. So I phoned the number I found on the official government site about tax credits and turns out it was legit. If you ignore it, they’ll send in debt collectors. Best just to ring the official number to get it sorted.

This is a SCAM, dont trust any other comments saying its real or from HMRC. The number on the letter you get has nothing to do with HMRC at all. If youre worried about tax credit debts, just ring the real HMRC number direct.

This isn’t a scam, it's from a team known as the Aged Debt Dept. I’d suggest getting in touch with HMRC before they start sending debt collectors round! Sometimes it can be related to an old partner if they didn’t settle payments while you were together.

Received a letter that looked kinda fishy right from the start, saying I owe something for working tax credit. I knew it was a con because I’ve never even applied for that! Rang the genuine tax credit office and they said they’re checking the number out and told me to just chuck the letter in the bin.
