Got a recorded call claiming there's a "fraudulent account linked to me" and to press 1 to talk to an investigator, then the line just went dead! Proper tax folks would call straight and actually chat to you, not mess about with some dodgy robot voice. It’s shocking that these scams trick people who aren't as clued up. Seriously, why isn’t OFCOM stepping in to stop this rubbish?

I just went through the same thing. I’ve reported the number to HMRC, and they’ve passed it along to their cybercrime team. Apparently, about a year ago, these scammers were using a real internal HMRC number as their caller ID, so when people looked it up, it seemed legit and lots got caught out. HMRC made it clear that they wouldn’t ring people up out of the blue - they always send a letter first, or only call back if you ask them to. They don’t do any automated voice messages either. Just thought I’d share in case it helps someone. The number was 03002003727.
