Got a robocall claiming to be HMRC saying I was involved in fraud and if I didn’t press 1 I’d be arrested soon.

Someone pretended to be from HMRC telling me I had to pay up right away or they’d send an arrest warrant. I just hung up without pressing 1 like they said. Guess I’ll find out if I end up arrested when I get on my plane this Thursday flying out of the UK.

They've been ringing me a couple of times recently. I picked up and it was one of those automated voices telling me to press 1 or I'd be arrested soon. I just said alright and hung up straight away. Definitely one of those robo-call scams.

Earlier today, my mum got a call on her mobile. The person said she was in trouble for tax fraud and needed to pay up. Then they just hung up after threatening to take all our belongings. The number they used was 0300 200 3305.

Just received a dodgy automated call claiming to be from HMRC. They had the audacity to say they’d pursue legal action if I didn’t ring them back.

It’s clearly a scam; the organisation is probably operating out of India, preying on folks here in the UK to fraudulently obtain their credit card information.

Whatever you do, don’t return the call!

Some robot called me saying I owed tax and HMRC would arrest me if I didn’t press 1. I pressed it anyway, and some Indian guy answered. I told him I worked for The Fraud Squad at Scotland Yard, and he said, “That’s interesting, we know how to handle people like you.” I shot back, “Arrest me then, you scammer!” That seemed to shut him up! I’m disabled and classed as vulnerable, so why isn’t the TPS sorting this out properly??!

I rang back after they called but they just cut off. What worries me is the number looks almost the same as the real HMRC one (HMRC number is 0300 200 3300). When you search this dodgy number on Google, HMRC shows up first because of how alike they are. These scammers are really cunning and will try any trick to scam honest folks out of their money.

Just like the other comments say, I got a call from a man with an American accent but sounded like a robot. He said he was from HM Revenue and Customs and was looking into me for tax evasion. Told me to press 1 or they’d send a warrant and I'd be arrested soon. If you just wait and don’t react, the call ends on its own.

Absolutely ridiculous. Total scam. They claimed I was behind on some tax payments. I logged into my online account while he was going on and asked him to specify which period I supposedly owed for - I’m self-employed so dealing with this stuff is normal for me. He got all flustered and confused. Then I asked for the date of my last submission to check against it - and weirdly, the call cut off straight away. These scammers could be targeting anybody (young, elderly, or someone vulnerable) and actually trick them into paying. The complete absence of any kindness or empathy is shocking.

What a nasty scam this is, pretending to be from HMRC and saying you're being looked into for tax fraud. I spotted it was a con immediately since HMRC wouldn’t ring you directly about something like that - they just don’t do it. The automated voice told me to press 1 but I ignored it, knowing it’d connect me to a fraudster trying to squeeze cash out of people. Please make sure to tell your older family members about this, as these calls can be really frightening for someone who's vulnerable or not tech-savvy.
