I rang BT about it and they told me if I think a call is a scam, just hang up straight away and then ring 1572, pick option 1. Apparently, that'll ban the number for good, stopping it from ringing any phones, not just yours. Thought others might find this useful.

I just got the call too!!! Saw a comment from yesterday where someone suggested what to do when these calls come through. Gave it a go myself. Just curious how many others actually bothered to try it. Honestly, this seems like the only way to fight back against these scams. I’ve heard the cops can only step in if they have some leads, and those sketchy call centres in Asia pushing these scams are rarely caught unless we all report them.

Got a call supposedly from an officer named Hawkins at the Inland Revenue. They left the usual message that others have mentioned, and they're still ringing. It all seemed quite legit until Joanna started saying she’d ring the cops, something HMRC wouldn't actually do. Honestly, it’s a well done scam, but a scam all the same. Today, I received a rather peculiar phone call from a woman claiming to be American. She introduced herself as Laura Hawkins and insisted she was representing HMRC. She mentioned that the issue at hand was quite delicate and hinted that I might be facing some sort of trouble. Although she came across as pleasant enough, it was painfully clear to me that this was a scam for several reasons; primarily, the fact that she was distinctly American raised alarm bells.
