Suddenly, the caller flipped and started swearing at him, threatening to track him down and do awful things. Proper nasty behaviour from that side.

It seems that this could be O2, and apparently they're offering a 40% discount on bills as a token of gratitude for enduring the pandemic! They claim they just need to verify your bank information and will send you a secure text, but curiously, they can't do this via the email they have on file or through the O2 app. But don't worry, they assure you it's absolutely not a scam! That’s how they kick off their message!
