I got a dodgy call from someone pretending to be Virgin Media, sounded like it was from some call centre in India. They said my internet was at risk and they could sort it out remotely. Then they asked me to download some app on my phone. I told them I don’t have a smartphone, which seemed to annoy the guy a bit, then he asked if anyone else in the house did. I said no and they just ended the call. Honestly, I wish there was some kind of spy gadget I could use on these lot to teach them a lesson. Let’s leave that to the clever folks to figure out.

He informed me that he was about to send a verification code to my phone through an SMS. Then he mentioned I'd need to click on a link in that message to confirm my identity. To buy some time and spare someone else from being scammed, I engaged him for a good five minutes with some silly questions. I started asking things like, “What on earth is an SMS? You keep switching between saying SMS and text message-do I need a different app to read each one? And how exactly does one open a text message?” The bloke lost his patience and eventually hung up, probably thinking I was quite the simpleton!
