I got a legit automated call from HMRC asking me to verify with a login code.

Today I kept failing to log into their website. They sent a code with six numbers to my mobile, which made me think it was legit since they also asked for my landline. Seems like their system’s just a bit messy though.

They didn't leave any voicemail, yet it seemed like a legit call. I just don't get why they don't say upfront they want to get in touch.

I've received three calls this evening, each one coming from a different area code. Quite perplexing!

I got a text from hmre with a code to verify my identity on the government website, had to prove I was actually me.

It's undoubtedly HMRC contacting you. They ring back with the access code. This isn’t some dodgy number, so you can feel safe with it.

So it seems like this number is a genuine HMRC one. Still, earlier today I got a bunch of calls claiming to be HMRC too. But can you really trust them all? How safe is this hmre 229 thing anyway? What if you end up getting scammed by 7272 - will hmre help sort it out 2992772997927? Honestly, it’s nearly impossible to tell the legit calls from the dodgy ones.

We received a call from this number with a pre-recorded message about an activation code. Can anyone confirm if this is genuinely from HMRC?

On the 27th of June, 2018, I had a rather peculiar experience with calls supposedly from HMRC. I was expecting to receive a 6-digit code, but when I picked up, there wasn't the usual automated message. Quite odd, really! I'll give it another go tomorrow to see if it's any different.

It was half past 11 at night when my phone suddenly started ringing. I’d been completely out cold and it really threw me off, making it hard to get back to sleep afterwards. When you get calls that late, you can’t help but assume it’s something urgent from family. Honestly, it’s not right for anyone to be making calls to a private number at such hours.

was looking for a code to access my online tax stuff and this number turned out to be genuine. hmrc for sure.

Just to clarify, that number isn’t anything dodgy. It’s actually the standard HMRC helpline, 0300 200 3600, but it has those international code digits added at the beginning which might throw some folks off.

What an odd number this is! Nonetheless, I can confirm that this is indeed the contact number HMRC uses to send out the access code for the self-assessment portal every single time you need it. The correct number is 0300 200 3600, though why there are those additional zeros without a country code (44) is a bit of a mystery. Here’s my take: It wouldn’t surprise me if some individuals provide inaccurate details, including a bogus phone number, just to have a practice run at completing their tax returns. Naturally, they hit a wall since they require that access code, which only goes to the rightful owner of the phone number. If someone tries ringing 0003002003600 to query the issue, that call won’t connect, which somehow spares HMRC the headache of dealing with those queries. Only those who twig that the first two zeros are unnecessary will successfully get through to the right line.

I haven't requested any access code, so I'm quite certain this isn't legitimate correspondence from HMRC. Moreover, seeing as the number originates overseas, it raises a big red flag for me - definitely sounds like a scam!

hmrc uses this automated line to send out unique 6-digit codes so folks can log into their online tax accounts. it’s nothing more than a one-time passcode they send for security purposes.

Got a recorded message from HMRC asking to verify my identity, but my phone blocked it straight away since it flagged the number as suspicious. You’d think they’d understand that a lot of folks don’t pick up calls from dodgy-looking numbers like that. What a silly oversight!

I didn’t get a call, but I did check 1471, and I’m inclined to think it was a dodgy number. I occasionally get these even though I’m quite cautious; being in the tech field, it’s probably that a mate or colleague has had their contacts pinched. Just an advisory to stay vigilant! I've been online since the 90s, and luckily, I’ve managed to avoid any viruses all these years.
