I got a legit automated call from HMRC asking me to verify with a login code.

Today I kept failing to log into their website. They sent a code with six numbers to my mobile, which made me think it was legit since they also asked for my landline. Seems like their system’s just a bit messy though.

They didn't leave any voicemail, yet it seemed like a legit call. I just don't get why they don't say upfront they want to get in touch.

I’ve had three calls tonight and each one showed a different number code on my phone.

I got a text from hmre with a code to verify my identity on the government website, had to prove I was actually me.

Sounds like it was definitely HMRC. They ring back their own number when sending you the access code. So it’s not some dodgy call, pretty legit really.

So it seems like this number is a genuine HMRC one. Still, earlier today I got a bunch of calls claiming to be HMRC too. But can you really trust them all? How safe is this hmre 229 thing anyway? What if you end up getting scammed by 7272 - will hmre help sort it out 2992772997927? Honestly, it’s nearly impossible to tell the legit calls from the dodgy ones.

We got a call from this number with a recorded voice giving some activation code. Does anyone know if this is really from HMRC?

Today I got a call from HMRC asking for a 6 digit code, but when I picked up there wasn’t any automated voice like I expected. I’ll give it another shot tomorrow to see if it changes.

It was half past 11 at night when my phone suddenly started ringing. I’d been completely out cold and it really threw me off, making it hard to get back to sleep afterwards. When you get calls that late, you can’t help but assume it’s something urgent from family. Honestly, it’s not right for anyone to be making calls to a private number at such hours.

was looking for a code to access my online tax stuff and this number turned out to be genuine. hmrc for sure.

Just to clarify, that number isn’t anything dodgy. It’s actually the standard HMRC helpline, 0300 200 3600, but it has those international code digits added at the beginning which might throw some folks off.

This number looks dodgy, but it’s actually the one HMRC uses to send the access code for their self-assessment website every single time someone logs in. The proper number should be 0300 200 3600, yet for some reason there’s some extra zeros added on without the +44 country code - why, who knows? Here’s what I reckon: some folks enter fake details, including a bogus phone number, just to practice filling out a tax return. They quickly hit a wall since they need a code that only the real phone number’s owner gets. Plus, if they try calling 0003002003600 to ask about the call, it won’t go through, which saves HMRC some hassle. Only people who twig that the initial two zeros aren’t necessary manage to make the call connect.

I never requested any kind of access code, so there’s no way this is from HMRC. Plus, the fact that the number is from abroad makes me think it’s a scam for sure.

Had a legit call from HMRC today. They texted me a code that I needed to enter to log into my government gateway. Seems proper official.

Absolute rubbish service from HMRE, no clue who that number even belongs to.

hmrc uses this automated line to send out unique 6-digit codes so folks can log into their online tax accounts. it’s nothing more than a one-time passcode they send for security purposes.

Got a recorded message from HMRC asking to verify my identity, but my phone blocked it straight away since it flagged the number as suspicious. You’d think they’d understand that a lot of folks don’t pick up calls from dodgy-looking numbers like that. What a silly oversight!
