About a month ago, I got a message about my BG smart meter, which I'd been having trouble with for over a year. To be sure, I searched for the British Gas customer service number (an 0800 one) on their official site and gave them a ring. Turns out, the message was legit. I called British Gas straight away and they told me it wasn’t from them. Then today, another message arrived saying ‘thanks for chatting with us’ with a link included. Didn’t click on it, obviously. I’m blocking the number now for good.

Watch out, this phone number is definitely dodgy. I got a text saying it was from British Gas about some problem with my smart meter. If you text back, it charges you at premium rates, so just ignore it and don’t reply!

Just like a few others have said here, I got a text about my British Gas smart meter not working and it told me to reply YES if I wanted an engineer out. At first, I thought it was genuine and typed back YES. Luckily, my actual energy company got in touch asking if I wanted to cover the cost of the visit, then it clicked that it was probably a scam. I quickly cancelled it before sending anything else.

I do have a fault with my meter but it seemed dodgy because they usually send emails with my name on them. These texts just said "Hello" at the start, which I always find fishy. Got a message saying there’s a problem with my meter, so I rang BG to check. Turns out, it wasn’t from British Gas at all. My meter’s working perfectly. The bloke I spoke to said, “We don’t send texts like that, especially not through a premium number. If there’s anything wrong with your account, we always contact you by phone or email if we can’t get through on your listed phone number.”
