Got a message today saying I don’t have a direct debit set up for a credit card ending in 9886. It asked me to ring this number to sort it out. Problem is, I don’t own a credit card with those digits, and even if I did, I wouldn’t want or need a direct debit for it. Seems like some kind of scam to me. I’d say anyone else who gets this should just ignore it or get in touch with their bank.

Its definitely a scam. I called up Bank of Scotland to check and they confirmed it wasnt legit. I had already given them my name and account details but they told me not to panic as thats not enough for them to get into my account or anything.

Got a letter today about a balance from more than half a year ago, which I know I settled and then shut the account. They’re saying I owe a £5 fee - I rang the number on the letter and some guy with an Asian accent picked up. Felt dodgy straight away so I just hung up. Later, I looked up the official Halifax contact (should’ve done that first) and they confirmed I don’t owe anything and my account’s closed. Looks like someone’s using old info and trying to scam people!! Total SCAM!!!

total scam alert. Got a txt on my phone showing up as "Halifax" saying i dont have a Direct Debit on my credit card ending in... (they actually had the right last four digits). It said to sort it out, call 0808 145 0365. I instantly thought it looked dodgy, so i googled the number. No Halifax Building Society linked to it anywhere, which made me sure it was a scam. Really scared they know my card’s last four digits like that.

i reckon u should only ring the number on your card or bank statement, not some random letter or txt. that's the only way u know it's legit and really ur bank. i almost overlooked a letter once, but guess what, i'd actually forgotten to pay my bill.

I'm behind on my payments because my partner got made redundant, and I haven’t actually contacted them yet, even though I know I probably should. Just so you know, it's only for incoming calls - not for making outbound calls or sending texts. If you get a call or text from the bank, it'll come from a different 0800 or 0808 number, but you can’t ring that back because it's only for outgoing communications. Usually, they leave a voicemail or message asking you to contact this specific number (08081450365), but they don’t explain what the call is about to keep things secure. If any message actually gives you details on why they’re calling or texting, don’t respond to it. Instead, it’s safer to ring your bank directly yourself to be sure.

I found out this number belongs to the collections team for Halifax and Bank of Scotland. They usually ring you with recorded messages if you’ve missed a payment or still owe something on an old account you might’ve closed. It’s a legit number, and you can always pop into a branch to confirm with the staff if you’re unsure.
