Loads of calls coming through to my landline from numbers with my area code but without the leading zero, all supposedly from Microsoft. I wish there was a way to block these. I usually warn people on the phone that its a scam, but sadly a lot of them are elderly and get duped. My father-in-law even got tricked by something alike recently.

The first thing I asked was if there was any cost involved, but the bloke dodged the question. When I told him I don’t use email, online banking, shopping or keep photos on the computer, he then started going on about other gadgets I might have being at risk! I didn’t hang about and ended the call there.

Something similar happened to me, my laptop looked like it was frozen or locked. They wanted me to pay £700. Unfortunately, I gave them a bit of info like my email and phone number, but I never gave out my bank card details. Luckily, my laptop is working fine now, but these scammers are really persuasive. It’s frustrating that there isn’t a way to stop all calls from these types of callers.

I got a message pop up on my laptop saying my info was being stolen by spyware or some virus and to ring 08000903853. I phoned and spoke to a guy called Peter Hall from California who said he was with Windows. I started to get wary when he asked me to enter stuff on my PC. I decided to ring the 0800 number shown, which said it was the “NETWORK SECURITY DEPARTMENT,” but I heard an American ring tone. The person who answered said they’d help with the problem and asked how old I was and what brand my PC was. I told him it was a software glitch and the PC’s brand didn’t matter. When I started to ask him more questions, he suddenly hung up. Luckily, my computer wasn’t actually infected and is fine now, but the whole thing was quite a frightening experience.

Got scammed - some bloke called 'Mark' from 'Prime Time Solutions' or something like that, sounded like he was American. Honestly can't believe I let him access my computer. It wasn’t until he started asking for cash that I twigged what was going on, asked for his address and then he just hung up on me. I’ve cancelled all my cards and switched up my passwords, the police told me to switch off my PC straightaway. Going to Currys tomorrow to get the whole thing wiped properly - absolutely stressful ordeal.

If you come across this, make sure you tell the online fraud police here: https://reportlite.actionfraud.police.uk/ but do NOT ring the number. To sort your computer out, press ctrl-alt-del, open task manager, then stop Chrome (or whatever browser you’re using). When you open Chrome again, don’t let it reload your old tabs.

If someone asks you to call them back, don't do it right away. Instead, first cut off your internet while keeping the page open. Then, just reboot your PC without shutting any windows. After that, you’ll see your computer works fine again.

I guess you’re on Windows for this? The best thing to do if it happens is press CTRL + ALT + DEL, open Task Manager and end every process linked to your browser, likely Chrome. After that, go back into the browser and clear your cache plus cookies. Make sure you have antivirus software installed if you don’t already, then run a full system scan - usually there won’t be anything serious. That should sort it out. I also suggest using an ad-blocker extension as it can stop lots of those annoying pop-ups that make you think you’ve got a virus.

I honestly can’t believe I ended up helping some hacker get into my computer. I’ve cancelled all my cards now, switched off my laptop, and disconnected my Wifi. Feeling proper gutted.

Got caught out by the same scam, but luckily I was chatting to a woman and quickly searched the number on my phone, so I didn’t let her get remote access. After restarting my laptop and checking everything was ok, I rang back and let them know exactly what I thought.

dodgy lot. had to hit ctrl alt del, open task manager and shut the browser down just to stop it. bloody thing keeps popping up again, so annoying!

DO NOT RING THIS NUMBER! I just called after my computer flagged some bank info was being stolen. Like an idiot, I answered and let them access my PC. Then they wanted £350 to sort it out. I said I couldn’t pay that, and they asked if I could get a family member to help, I said no. Then they just said I’d still have problems if I didn’t fix it. I told them I’d rather not have a computer than pay them. Then they said bye and hung up. Be very careful with this one!

This was just like all the other scams I’ve heard about. I was on the phone with a ‘tech support’ guy for about 20 minutes and actually thought he was legit until he suddenly asked me to pay £500 to sort out my laptop. I called him out on being a scammer and he got all defensive. I ended the call straight away. Then I shut down my laptop, turned off the WiFi, did a factory reset and connected to a new network. Definitely make sure you change all your passwords as well!

My laptop suddenly showed a pop-up warning that it was infected with a virus and would shut down within five minutes unless I called a number. Not thinking it through, I dialled the number. An Asian lady answered and walked me through steps, claiming she needed to access my device to sort out the issue. Even though she sounded really official, I caught her repeating the same phrases a few times and noticed a typo in her message, which instantly made me suspicious and I quickly turned off my laptop. I’m planning to take it to a repair shop later just to be on the safe side because I’m worried about logging into my bank online now.

I got this message outta nowhere - I tried calling three times, and each time they answered but the line cut out almost straight away. It made me a bit wary, especially coz of the weird background noise and the last call, the bloke who answered was laughing. I was on Mozilla Firefox when it all went down.

Total scam. Found this link on some dodgy Windows website, seemed pretty real at first. There was a woman speaking through the computer saying I had to call this number to get rid of a critical flame malware. She said if I closed the page Windows would block my PC to stop the virus spreading to their system. Definitely don’t call that number!

I got a call from 0800 090 38 and suddenly a warning appeared on my laptop saying it was hacked. They asked for loads of personal info to ‘fix’ it and even tried to get my bank details. I said no, and then the person just ended the call. I rang back, and they told me I had to pay them for the ‘repair’. Don’t fall for this, these people are just scammers!

Screen got all frozen so I had to do a SYSTEM RESTORE just to get my computer working again.

They somehow got into my computer and showed awful videos of people getting hurt, telling me I’d be next if I didn’t phone this number and pay up. I changed browsers and luckily they lost access to my PC after that.

Got a call from someone claiming to be a "Microsoft engineer" after my screen locked up. They tried taking control of my computer and then started pushing me to buy some expensive security software, priced between £149-189. I just hung up straight away and ran my own antivirus scan instead.

Just like everyone else, I got a pop-up saying my PC was blocked and I had to ring the number. Knew straight away it was a scam, so I gave them a right earful until they hung up. They called back and I gave them the same treatment. Then my number got blocked. Surely there's a way to report this and have their number blacklisted?

Same here. I had to force close Firefox using Ctrl+Alt+Delete to stop the message from showing. No idea how it slipped past Malwarebytes and IO-bit Autocare, honestly.

So on Friday evening, this pop-up showed up on my laptop saying I had some sort of “flameware” or malware, and that hackers were after my bank info and Facebook password. It told me to ring a number straight away for help. I called, and this guy with an Asian accent answered, saying I'd need to pay £120 to sort out the issue. Yeah, right! Didn’t give them a penny and just hung up. Then I cut off my WiFi and shut the laptop down. I’m going to get a new bank card just in case. Totally obvious they were scammers.
