Received a call purporting to be from Microsoft, insisting that a virus has invaded my computer. Truth be told, my system is running perfectly well. It feels like they’re targeting the elderly with these despicable scams. Truly appalling behaviour!

My computer suddenly showed a big red warning, which freaked me out a bit since I thought I might have accidentally clicked something dodgy. I read through the entire notice but right away noticed they’d misspelled “response” as “responce” at the bottom. The grammar was pretty rubbish too. Definitely a scam, no doubt about it.

They try and freak you out by saying your info is in danger, hoping you’ll call them back. Total scam.

If you don’t wanna restart your PC just to shut down a stuck program, you can hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, then pick Task Manager. From there, you just find the app causing trouble like Firefox or Chrome, and close it from that list. Easy way to stop things freezing up!

I got a call from 0800 069 8683 and it seemed dodgy, so I looked it up online and found out it's a scam. I just turned my PC off, waited a couple of minutes, then switched it back on. After doing that, everything went back to normal for me. Would recommend not answering if you get this number!

Total rip off alert! They just want you to ring their number, so don’t fall for it!! Like others have said before, hit ctrl + alt + del on your keyboard - it opens up the task manager. Find the browser that popped up that “critical” warning, whether it’s Chrome or Explorer or something else. Right click it, choose ‘end task’, and the pop-up will vanish. Then just reopen your browser and you’re all good. Just a bunch of time-wasting scammers trying it on.

Don’t call 0800 069 8683, it’s a total scam. Just turn off your computer, leave it off for a couple of minutes, then switch it on again. Did that myself and everything’s fine now, working like it should. Trust me, no need to ring them.

I found a number in the Red Pages and gave it a ring, everything sounded legit at first. But when they asked me for money, I got suspicious and just ended the call. The next day I tried to ring that number again and it was dead! Same thing happened with 01624891414, they had called me back, but now no response. Proper scammers. Plus, I was already on edge because someone had hacked my emails recently and sent messages pretending to be me, telling my accounts lady to transfer cash to dodgy bank accounts.

WARNING! My laptop suddenly popped up a scary warning saying Microsoft Edge was corrupted and my private info might get stolen. I called the number displayed and some bloke with an Indian accent claimed to be from Microsoft support. He kept insisting my computer was in trouble and pushed me to pay £260 for some security software, asking for my card details too. He also wanted to access my computer remotely. I ended the call straight away, ran a full virus scan and luckily everything’s totally fine.

Definitely a scam going on with this one, 08000698683. That red screen thing is just trying to scare folks. I wouldn't call the number they share if I were you.

I was working on my laptop when out of nowhere, a red warning popped up saying the firewall had blocked someone trying to steal my info, and it told me to call 0800 069 8683. The message wouldn’t go away, so I had to force shut down my laptop. I didn’t call the number straight away, feeling a bit freaked out, but later I searched the number online and found loads of others had the same scam pop up. Glad I didn’t get caught. I sent all the info to the City of London police. Seriously, don’t phone that number and never let anyone access your computer remotely!

Totally a rip-off. It’s so frustrating when you’re concentrating on something really important and it suddenly makes you close everything, losing all your progress. Really annoying!!!!!!

My laptop showed a weird red alert and the number called me asking if they could get remote access to my computer, which sounded really sketchy so I just ended the call. Then, only a few seconds later, I got another call from a New York number but I didn’t pick up.

So, over the weekend and today, I got some weird messages pop up on my laptop telling me to ring 08000698683. I searched online and luckily found this page where others mentioned the same thing. Glad I didn’t call - sounds like it’s best to stay away from that number.

Got the exact same warning pop up on my laptop. I looked up the number on the “Who called me?” website and read loads of reviews. I then tried calling back loads of times from a blocked number, just to waste their time and have a laugh. But it just kept ringing busy. Have they already cashed in and buggered off?

My partner gave this number a bell. The person who answered claimed her computer was infected, then tried to push some kind of security package on her for more than £300 for just 2 years. Total SCAM.

If you wanna close that message, try hitting control, alt, and delete all at once, then select task manager from the blue screen. When task manager pops up, find your browser like Google Chrome and click on it, then choose end task. That should sort it.

Just got a scary red alert pop up on my laptop and it really freaked me out. Being a bit cautious, I searched for the real Microsoft support number, which turned out to be totally different from the one they gave me in the alert. Then I decided to check that suspicious number here on your site and after reading some of the other reviews, I’m honestly relieved I did. Safe to say I’m turning off my computer right away!

Had the same issue as described - I snapped a quick pic of that red scam warning, ripped the battery out of my laptop, then shut it down since that scary message wouldn’t disappear. After running a full Norton scan which came up clean, I opened Chrome once more and thankfully the alert had vanished.

twice now ive seen this scary "red screen" alert sayin my bank info and other private stuff might have been hacked, supposedly from "google chrome". They keep pushing you to dial 0800 698 683, which looks like a free call number or summat. Ive been too wary to actually phone it. Has anyone else given it a go?

I got this sketchy red warning pop-up with terrible spelling saying I'd been hacked and my bank info was at risk. The dodgy thing froze Chrome, so I had to open up task manager to check it out. I snapped a screenshot of the warning, then decided to shut down my laptop instead of restarting it. When I turned it back on, Chrome worked fine again. I've sent that nasty red alert screenshot over to Chrome/Google - maybe they’ll look into it. Absolutely a total scam, don’t fall for it!

Got that same bright red text from a so-called 'toll free' number, which made me want to reboot after reading these comments here. Everything seems fine up to now. 2227

Got a scary message pop up telling me my bank info was at risk and to ring a ‘toll free’ number. Thankfully I looked up the number on ‘who called me’ first (really good site, thanks!). Couldn’t close the page no matter what so I’m going to reboot my phone now. Definitely seems fishy!

Just now this happened to me on Google Chrome on my laptop, luckily I stayed calm since I don’t keep any banking info saved there.

Honestly, just ignore this number completely. I've come across another one going about too, it's 0800 088 5258. After digging a bit, it seems both are dodgy calls and really shouldn’t be given the time of day. They’re absolutely not trustworthy.

I received an identical call where they claimed my bank info was in danger on Google and told me to pick up the phone straight away. After checking out the earlier warning on this site (big thanks for that), I’m definitely thinking this toll-free number is pretty suspicious.
