Got a dodgy NHS text last night. It said something like, “You’ve been near someone with the Omicron variant. Get your free PCR test here...” I was a bit suspicious because there’s loads of scams going about. So, I checked my NHS Covid app, but there was no alert there. Then, I messaged a mate who works in Test and Trace to get a second opinion. We looked up the number (+447519328614) on who-calls.me.uk and saw it’d been reported 181 times since early January, which raised more red flags. After digging around a bit more, we concluded it was most likely a scam. I reported it to Action Fraud, though it was tricky as they don’t seem to have a clear option for text scams. This morning I rang 119 to double-check my Covid record, and the lady on the phone confirmed they hadn’t sent any messages my way. Apparently, genuine NHS Test and Trace texts will always include your name and date of birth, which this one didn’t. Thought I’d share this in case anyone else gets a message like this - these scams are definitely on the rise.
