I got a call about my MBNA card that felt really off, pretty sure it was a scam. Something just didn’t seem right.

About a day after I put in an application for a MBNA credit card, I got a message the next morning supposedly from their Fraud and Disputes department. They wanted me to verify who I was through a link they sent. Being a bit trusting, I clicked it but soon saw it was dodgy when they asked for my passport, driving licence and a picture of me. I didn’t share any of that and just got rid of the message right away.

This is the actual Customer Service contact for MBNA - the same number on the back of their card - but I’ve had quite a few dodgy calls from scammers using this number pretending to be from MBNA’S FRAUD TEAM. They rang me on another number first, then called back using MBNA customer service number, how is that allowed? Kept calling again and again after I kept hanging up. Really pushy and convincing. Seemed legit. Obviously a scam, hang up straight away. They had my name, knew my location, said my card was being used miles away. I frozen my cards through the app, deleted all my banking apps just to be safe. Rang MBNA, they told me they never make calls like that. Best to just hang up and switch your phone off.

Instead of calling them straight away, I looked up the number online. Good thing I did - it’s a SCAM.

I received a call from this number today, on the 25th of May at 10 o'clock in the morning. Since I didn’t recognise it, I chose not to pick up. My phone has caller ID that notifies me about potential spam or scam calls. If it’s something significant, I reckon they can always leave me a voice message! By the way, I’m based in Scotland.

Spoke to someone claiming to be from MBNA with a proper English accent and seemed to know a bit about me. Got two calls from this number - first one was pretending to be NAT WEST saying they’d cancel my card cos it’s been used by someone else! They claimed to be from FRAUD PREVENTION or something like that. When I asked for details, they were really dodgy and wouldn’t give a proper answer. I received a call from this number, claiming to be from MBNA’s security team. Right off the bat, I felt a bit uneasy, so I inquired about his name. He went by Harvey Cartwright, but when I asked him to spell it out, things took a turn. When I pushed for details on his calling location, he resorted to name-calling, calling me a "fat b****" before abruptly ending the call. I was keen to have a bit of banter with him, but he was clearly a killjoy. This reeks of a scam, so I’d advise everyone to hang up and steer clear!

This number is actually MBNA Card Services’ primary contact. I got a text about a new card but the last 4 digits didn’t match anything I knew. Called MBNA and turns out it's legit. They’re just changing the numbers on companion cards linked to the same account for security reasons, apparently Lloyds who took over have this rule. So if one card gets lost or nicked, the other can still be used.

Looks like MBNA is updating their companion cards to have unique numbers for better safety. This way, if one gets lost or stolen, they won’t have to cancel all the cards. Plus, purchases will be tracked separately for the main account holder and the companion cards. Makes sense for added security!
