Absolutely dodgy scam, just ignore the call completely!!!

Have a look at the comments below!! There's a clear difference between a scam number and a spoofed number. Scam numbers tend to be fake, often generated by computers. Spoofed numbers, on the other hand, are real business numbers that scammers copy to trick people into giving away their bank details. Spoofed numbers, especially ones pretending to be from banks, are extremely risky. I've shared some tips below on how to spot and avoid calls from spoofed bank numbers (these are the worst kind). If you ring your bank to see if a call you got is legit (like the post below), the call centre team can tell if the bank is actually trying to reach you and can put you through to the right people or sort it out. But they might not know every single number the bank uses. Even if the call centre says it’s a scam, that doesn't always mean the number itself is dodgy. Spoofed numbers, using real business lines, are a big issue for companies and their clients. So is the call real or fake? No one really knows! Best thing - CHECK WITH YOUR BANK!

Got a call earlier claiming to be from HSBC but seemed totally dodgy. Definitely felt like some kind of scam.

Absolute scam alert! I got a call from someone claiming to be from HSBC fraud team, asking if I’d made a couple of purchases online to John Lewis and Argos. I said no, and they said the fraud dept had stopped the transactions, so it was all fine. Then they got me to confirm my identity using the ‘voice is my password’ system, which I did. I asked the caller, who said her name was Amy, to prove she was from HSBC by naming a recent credit on my card. Suddenly, the call dropped. I called HSBC fraud straight away and they told me they hadn’t called me at all. I quickly disabled my voice activation on the phone and tried to log in to the mobile app. That’s when a message popped up saying my mobile banking had been disabled because it was logged in on a new device! My heart sank. Panicking, I rang HSBC again, changed all my passwords and received a text code from the same number I’d gotten a code from just 20 minutes earlier. I changed everything and asked them to flag my account about the situation. What I reckon happened - Amy was a fake caller who recorded my voice to get access to my phone banking. The person on the other end took that info and tried to reset my passwords by requesting the codes. Thank goodness I didn’t give them the text code or else they could’ve taken full control. I shudder to think what would’ve happened next! Do NOT answer or trust calls from this number! Always call the bank directly yourself.

Beware, this number is definitely a scam pretending to be from HSBC. If they ring you, don’t give out any info and just hang up straight away. If you're worried about your account, call HSBC directly using their genuine number 0345 740 4404. Don’t trust calls from unknown numbers like this.

Total scam. Just put the phone down and ring the genuine HSBC instead.

***SCAM ALERT*** I’m with HSBC and got a call from a bloke claiming to be from their fraud team. He said there was some dodgy activity on my account - something like a £37 purchase at a Staples in Cardiff. Thing is, I’m nowhere near Cardiff and I’ve got my card right here. He asked for my IB number (which I think is like a personal ID, not my account or sort code) to confirm who I was. I wasn’t convinced though, so I asked for proof he was really from HSBC. He told me to Google ‘hsbc card fraud detection number’ and sure enough, the number he rang from showed up. I checked out the webpage, looked genuine with HSBC branding and the same number displayed... Weird. He then wanted to know if I had my card with me - yes. Had I given out my details to anyone? No. Had I replied to any scams like those fake HMRC ones? Also no. To test him, I asked if he could tell me about any transactions made on Saturday. He said he wasn’t allowed to share that info, which felt a bit dodgy. I got his name down - probably made up. He insisted he hadn’t asked for any vital details like account or sort code, just my personal ID number. I said I felt uneasy but gave it anyway. Next, he told me to log into my account but not to fully sign in, just to go to the personal ID section, which I did online. Then, he wanted me to open the HSBC mobile app and generate a security code for him to confirm I had the phone. Seriously?! He also asked for the name of my first school, so he must have got into my security Q&A because of that ID number. At that point, I realised he was trying to get access while we were still on the call. Clever but sneaky trick. I stayed calm, told him I wasn’t comfortable continuing, and said I’d get in touch with HSBC myself through legit means. Turns out, HSBC haven’t contacted me at all, and there’s nothing suspicious on my account. I’ve reported the whole thing to HSBC just to be safe.

Got a text, then a call from someone claiming to be HSBC about fraud. They asked if I'd used my card on Just Eat, which I said I hadn’t. They then tried asking for my security info, but I said no. After that, they said they’d have to cancel my card.

This has got to be a scam! Don’t pick up if you see this number calling. I rang back and spoke to someone called Suneal claiming to be from the fraud department - but I’m convinced it’s just a con artist. They were quite convincing, but remember, HSBC would never ask you for your online banking reference or your secure key password. Stay cautious, and if you’re unsure, always get in touch with HSBC directly using the number on the back of your bank card.

This number definitely isn’t from HSBC, it’s a scam! They’re attempting to get into your bank details, so make sure you report it straight away!

I got a call from someone saying they were from HSBC, but it wasn’t them at all. Totally a scam trying to steal money from your bank account! Watch out, it’s definitely fraud.

Around 15 minutes ago, I got a call from someone claiming to be part of HSBC’s online fraud department. They told me there were three unusual charges on my Amazon account - one for £250, another for £100, and a final one for £50. They asked me to confirm that I hadn’t made these purchases, and naturally, I said that none of them looked familiar. Then they wanted me to create a security code so they could supposedly cancel these payments. Honestly, I found it strange that they asked me for a code when I would’ve thought HSBC staff could just check my account directly. I declined to provide any code and ended the call straight away. If they were truly from HSBC, I imagine they wouldn’t be so pushy about security. Carl Whiting

Somebody rang claiming to be from my bank’s fraud division, saying there was suspicious activity on my account. They wanted all sorts of security info, and when I got suspicious and questioned them, they told me I could just Google the number to check it was legit. I contacted my bank and got them to freeze online access, but they said it wasn’t needed to stop my debit card. A few days later, the caller phoned me again; since I recognised the number, I said I wouldn’t talk and that I’d confirm with the bank myself. The bank assured me everything was fine, so I waited for a new security token. A couple days after activating it, I noticed unauthorised transactions from Dubai on my statement, which seemed to be done with my card. The bank quickly cancelled the card and refunded the money, so hopefully that’s that. Just a heads-up to anyone else - this is definitely a SCAM.

This lady claimed to be calling from HSBC's fraud department. Interestingly, the number showed up on HSBC’s official website.

Beware of calls from 0345 600 8891 - they’re a scam! They pretend they’re from the HSBC fraud department. First, they mention a fake DPD delivery email, then say there’s been weird activity on your bank account. Don’t fall for it!
