Got a robocall on my work line saying I’m about to get a warrant if I don’t hit 1, claiming HMRC flagged some fraud on my name. Sounds dodgy to me. I’m guessing if I’d pressed it, they’d either rip me off with crazy call charges or some scammer would start asking for my card info. Now, just sitting tight for my so-called arrest.

Got a call from what looked like HMRC saying I was in trouble for tax fraud and that I'd be arrested if I didn’t pay up. They were faking the HMRC phone numbers - the real HMRC income tax number is 0300 200 3300 and the self assessment line is 0300 200 3310, so these scam calls changed just the last three digits. Watch out, it’s a total scam trying to scare you.

This number called me pretending to be from HMRC, saying I was involved in fraudulent activity and had to press 1 to speak to the case officer, who apparently goes by Parker. I got quite stressed since I'm behind on some tax payments. The "officer" kept telling me not to interrupt as he explained that if I didn’t pay soon, I’d face a £36,000 fine and 5 years in jail. When I offered to pay from my debit card, he said it was the only option right now, or else someone would visit the next day with letters and demands. Luckily my wife was there and found the persistence suspicious. She quickly googled the number and it turned out to be a scam. My mate ended up getting loads of automated calls all from that same number. Something about a warrant for arrest or whatever. He’s got OCD and learning challenges, so he freaked out proper, saying he was about to be arrested. It took ages to calm him down. Honestly, there should be a way to ring BT and get them to block numbers like 0300 200 3678 straight away. Just hang up if it’s HM Revenue & Customs - they never ring you like that.
