I received a rather intimidating phone call from someone claiming to be from HMRC, insisting that I was on the brink of being imprisoned for supposed tax fraud. It was quite distressing, even though I recognised it as a scam. Just a word of caution to everyone: be wary of any phone calls purporting to come from HMRC.

Got a fake call from HMRC with some robotic message telling me to hit 1 to avoid getting arrested for tax evasion. Don't fall for it, just hang up straightaway. Over the last few weeks I’ve had a few from numbers beginning with 0300200 but each ended with different last four digits, like someone else mentioned. I just block them all now. Real HMRC calls usually show up as no caller ID.

Just got yet another call pretending to be from HMRC. Honestly, phone firms could easily sort this by stopping any number that keeps ringing out non-stop. If a business really needs to make loads of calls all day, they should have to prove it and register properly before being allowed to do so. Simple fix, really.

Got another one of those dodgy scam calls again, all from a new UK number this time. Blocking them feels pointless because they only use a number for a day or two before switching to another one. I’ve reached out to my MP, asking if they could push for better laws and for the police to look into those firms selling or renting out lots of these UK landline numbers alongside the tech that lets scammers call from anywhere without being traced. You can check your local parliament’s website for info on how to take action with these.

Cheers to everyone warning about that number. It just rang me and honestly, I nearly got worried! I'm with the last commenter about having a list of companies who genuinely need to make these calls. I’m going to follow that advice and contact my MP to find out if there’s anything Parliament can do to clamp down on these firms selling these numbers. Seems like these scammers are snapping up hundreds of them at once.
