Steven White from HMRC has called me three times now, each time with an American-sounding robotic voice. I tried ringing back once, but as soon as I mentioned I wasn’t comfortable sharing my info because it felt like a scam, they just cut me off. For some reason, these calls usually start coming through for me after midday GMT.

Got a call from what looked like HMRC - actually had two different numbers try the same trick on me. Both times they left a voicemail but I dont pick up unknown numbers. Blocked them straight away. Pretty clear its a scam, but it really annoys me how they’re scaring the older folks who might actually fall for this. I just got a call on my mobile from some random number - honestly, these scammers can be from literally anywhere because it’s so cheap to get foreign numbers now (I pay just £3 a month for a US number to keep in touch with family!). There’s no way HMRC would ring you like that, it’s totally against data protection rules and they never tell you who they actually are on the phone.
