On the 10th and 11th of June 2026, I got calls from a man using the Court of Appeal Civil Division's hearings number, 020 7947 6195. Curious, I rang back to check and spoke to a very kind woman who told me it was a scam - she said HMRC and the Civil Appeals office don’t contact people like that. I ended up informing my bank straight away as I was really anxious about the safety of my accounts.

First, I got a call from a mobile number, then they had me check a number that looked like it was from HMRC. After that, they rang me back using that same .gov number, which I’ve since figured was faked. My banking app wasn’t working properly, so they offered to help fix it, and then gave me some account details to pay into. Stupidly, I went ahead and made the payment. When they asked me to send a screenshot of the transfer to prove it, I said no and the guy suddenly became really pushy. Right now, I’m waiting on the phone with my bank’s fraud team.

Seems like a lot of us have experienced the same thing. A woman phoned me demanding money, threatening to get me arrested if I didn’t pay up. I ended up putting the money into my HMRC account, but then they started to get all annoyed, asking why I paid straight into my own account instead of giving it to them directly. Feeling unsure, I went to the police and they confirmed it was a scam. It’s really been a nightmare for us. Just a heads up - they usually call from one mobile number first and then ring again from another, like 02079476195.

Really dodgy situation. They come across as proper official, even quoting legal stuff to make it look real. The strange thing is they use a number that looks like it’s from a government agency. First, you get an automated message telling you to press 1 to speak to someone. After a bit of a chat, they just hang up and then ring back saying you ended the call. They also mentioned sending letters that got returned, which is supposedly why they’re ringing you now. Honestly, these folks should get into serious trouble for this.

I got a call claiming to be from HMRC and told to “press 1 to speak to someone.” I knew right away it wasn’t legit because HMRC wouldn’t ring like that out of the blue. Usually, if they contact you, it’s after sending a letter about a query. Plus, HMRC never uses automated calls; they’ll speak to you personally. If you’re unsure whether a call is real, just ask them to put a note on your file and then ring the official number on the gov.uk website - the person there can check if there’s any record of the call.

Hello there, I just received a rather alarming call which resulted in my parting with a hefty sum of £1769. They frightened me with threats of arrest and all sorts of legal drivel. In my panic, I ended up giving them the cash. It dawned on me afterward that I’d been duped, but by then it was far too late to reclaim my funds. I've lodged a dispute with my bank, so fingers crossed they can recover my money - I really need it to handle my mortgage and other expenses. Without it, I'm facing a tough month ahead.

I received a rather unsettling phone call, initially from 07525859431. The caller was rather aggressive and menacing, which prompted me to hang up. Shortly afterwards, I received another call from a different number, where the individual claimed to be from HMRC. He stated that I owed a hefty sum of £775 in unpaid taxes and warned that I’d be blacklisted. He even threatened me with an arrest warrant, saying my bank accounts, passport, and driving licence would be frozen. I was in a complete panic; it felt as though they were relentless in their harassment. He insisted I visit a website called "Court of Appeal Civil Division", which turned out to be a dead end but led me straight back to his number. He wouldn’t let me gather my thoughts and immediately began requesting my banking details. Eventually, I realised it was a scam, as HMRC would never ask for sensitive information like that. I'm left terrified of these fraudsters and now dread answering any phone calls.

This number rang me up claiming I hadn't settled my taxes and mentioned I owe £800. They asked if I had a solicitor for criminal cases. The guy was pretty hard to understand, so I had to ask him to say it again more than once, and he snapped back with something like, "Can't you understand English or what?" Such cheek!

I just received a phone call from someone saying they were John David from HMRC. The number they called me from was 892242761, and they mentioned HR985606 along with something like 248/4975. Really felt fishy to me.

Total scam, they rang me trying to get my personal info under the guise of a "verification." I told them this wasn’t the genuine HMRC number and if they wanted to contact me, they should stick to the official number listed on the HMRC site. They never bothered to call again after that.

I received a rather alarming call from the number 02079476195, with someone claiming to be from HMRC. They went on about an arrest warrant and mentioned that they'd frozen my bank accounts, passport, and driving licence. I must confess, it sent me into a bit of a panic. It felt like they were really trying to harass me! After doing some digging, I'm convinced it's all a scam.

**WARNING SCAM** I got a call from this number where the guy said his name was John David and claimed there was a warrant out for me. He gave me some HMRC id, a case number and a warrant id. He said I’d paid too little tax and that maybe my employer was to blame. Then he told me I had to get in touch with the court of appeals, or I could just sort it out without going to court. Definitely seemed dodgy.

I got a call from a bloke with an Asian accent who claimed I had done something dodgy with HMRC and threatened me with jailtime. He sounded really sure of himself and was quite pushy, making me feel like a criminal. He told me to check the gov.uk site and gave me a phone number to ring. Shortly after, a woman using a very similar number called me, saying she was from HMRC. She kept asking how much money was in my bank account and kept insisting I pay £1200.

Got a call from some bloke threatening me, saying I was caught up in fraud and tax dodging under some law he rambled about, something to do with ‘Her Majesty’. He warned me I’d be prosecuted. I was an idiot and ended up paying them a lot, lost that cash for good. They also pushed me to use only Revolut for the payments, knowing full well that Revolut probably won’t help get your money back. Total scam.

I got a call from a woman with an Indian accent, scaring me about some tax I supposedly owe - £1,899. She kept saying if I don’t pay up, the police or court will come after me and arrest me. She said the conversation was being recorded but wouldn’t give her name. She also accused me of working without paying tax and that I’d be prosecuted for it. Felt really dodgy, not sure what to believe.

A mate of mine got one of those HMRC scam calls, wasn't me but I heard all about it. They wanted her to pay using Amazon gift cards or something daft like that. She was lucky enough to get some of the money from the vouchers back, but she's still out about 2 grand. Such a nightmare!

I got a call from someone claiming I’d end up in prison over unpaid taxes. They sounded super legit, and what’s worse, their number was listed on what looked like a government site. They hit me with loads of fake details to try and freak me out, saying I owed HMRC loads and needed to pay right away to avoid jail time. Honestly, don’t share any details with them. They’re just after your cash, just tell them to shove off. This is a classic SCAM, watch out!

This morning, I got a call from this number. A guy with an Indian accent told me I was under investigation for tax fraud and had to call back or risk arrest. I didn’t think twice and rang the number right away. But when I asked about the tax issue, he couldn’t explain why I hadn’t received anything in writing. He just kept saying they’d been trying to reach me, then suddenly ended the call. It was a pretty bad experience, and I’m honestly shocked I fell for it, considering I usually think pretty clearly!

This number turned out to be a total scam. I contacted my local police in Manchester and they confirmed it’s not legit. The caller claimed to be from HMRC saying I owed them £2400. They even tried to scare me with threats about police arresting me. The person said her name was Stella Foster with case number 892241761 and a warrant numbered 246/1965, badge 9856LE. Do not trust or answer calls from 02079476195, it’s definitely dodgy.

So this number called my mum, pretended to be from HMRC and said if she didn’t pay up, the police would come get her. They got really pushy, telling her she had to pay everything or she'd end up in jail. She was scared enough to listen at first but then just hung up. From what I can tell, there’s at least a couple of scammers using this trick. When I looked up the number, it came up with the name Jenny Parker.

Got a call on 15/06/20 from some Asian guy named Richard Harris, reciting some rehearsed spiel. He threatened me with arrest unless I paid over £1700. Since I work in telesales, I decided to play along, letting Richard think I'd cough up a grand or so, then gave him the boot with a rude goodbye and blocked his number. Next, they tried again from 02077947693, which got blocked straight away too. I caught on because I gave them a wrong postcode - that’s when I realised it was a scam. They even pretended the call was being recorded to sound more legit.

Got a call from some bloke claiming I owed a huge amount for tax evasion, something about thousands of pounds. The guy sounded Indian and tripped up saying the issue was from 2017 onward, then accidentally said 2016 to now, so pretty obvious he was making it up. Never give money over phone or online after a random call like that. If tax folks had a real problem, they’d send a proper letter through the post, surely. What weirded me out is how he had my details in the first place.

Got a call from a man with an Indian accent who said there was a warrant for my arrest and even gave me a reference number. He claimed I’d be held for two weeks and that I owed £1757 in tax from the years 2014 to 2018. He insisted I had to sort it out either by facing court with HMRC or paying the full amount immediately. When I questioned him more, he threatened to alert the police and said I’d be sent to jail. It was really distressing, so I ended up ringing the police myself, and fortunately, they reassured me.

She insisted I pay £1000 immediately over the phone or I’d face a £30,000 fine or even jail time. She said if I pay now, they’d drop the court case and I can sort the rest later when I can afford it. Got a call from 020 8200 7675 the other day. When I told them this isn’t the HMRC, they tried sending me to the HMRC site where that number’s listed under the Court of Appeal Civil Division. I pointed out that wasn’t the number they called me from, and he hung up sharpish. Then he rang back using that exact number, telling me “we don’t always call from the same extension, you’re being rude, make sure you get a lawyer.” I told him I didn’t buy that he was HMRC, and he just kept getting annoyed about me being rude before hanging up on me.
