Someone called me pretending to be HMRC, claiming I hadn’t paid some tax and that if I didn’t pay straight away, there’d be legal trouble. They even asked for my bank details, but I told them HMRC wouldn’t ask for that over the phone and would always send a letter instead.

Today at about 4.15pm I got a call on my landline from this number. A young bloke, he said his name was Alex and that he was ringing from the Medic Alert Foundation. Now, I’m actually a subscriber to Medic Alert, so I was a bit suspicious but also nearly got fooled! He claimed I might qualify for a free Medic Alert pendant, but I already have one. Then he started asking me stuff like if I use a walking stick or walker, if I’m over 50, and about any health issues. I told him that if he was really from Medic Alert, he would have that info already. After that, he just said “Thanks for your time” and hung up. Sounds like a scam or maybe some kinda ID theft attempt. It’s such a pain that all I get on my landline now are dodgy calls like this. Might just have to cut off the landline altogether and stick with my mobile sim and broadband router instead.

On the 17th of January, 2022, a man phoned me, speaking clearly and with a lot of confidence. He claimed he was following up on a complaint about damp and mould caused by loft insulation. Thing is, I never made any such complaint. When I told him this, he just said, "Thanks for your time," and ended the call. Pretty obvious this was a scam. The number he called from was 02045 162717. After checking, I found that 02045 is actually a code for Bottrop-Kirchhellen in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

Got a call from some guy claiming I’d been put on a list because of mobility and health problems, saying I qualified for a free alert system. I asked where he got my number and he said it’s from some database of eligible folks. I told him I wasn’t keen on chatting about my health with someone I don’t know, and asked for his company’s name and number so I could check it out and ring back later. Then he just ended the call. A quick search online showed loads of warnings about this scam. Honestly, steer clear of it.
