If you see a number you don't know pop up on your phone with caller ID, just let it ring through to voicemail. Almost every time as soon as the answering machine kicks in, the person on the other end hangs up straight away.

Some bloke rang and asked if I could verify my name and address (he actually got it right) and whether I shop at Sainsburys. I didn't say yes and asked what the call was actually for. He said it was "just consumer research." I told him that wasn’t a good enough answer and he hung up straight away. I quickly blocked the number using TalkTalk’s ‘Block Last Caller’ tool. Hopefully, I won’t be bothered by these muppets again.

I decided to call back because I figured it could be about my daughter, who was away on a school trip. When someone answered with "hello, welcome to Activate Now," I quickly ended the call. Now I'm left wondering what exactly I might have signed up for!

I always get asked for a Mr L### who hasn’t lived here for decades (at least fifty years). I tell them straight away, mention the useless telephone preference service we’re signed up to, and ask them to take our number off their lists - which they never actually do. This nonsense has been going on for half a year now. Some callers are ruder than others, some tell more lies, and some just won’t give up, but if you stand your ground they usually don’t hang around long. I just wish there was someone who’d actually do something useful to stop all this.

A lady rang me earlier asking if I was Mr ####, who apparently used to live in my flat but passed away about 7 years ago. I told her I wasn’t, then she commented I sounded quite young and asked if I was over or under 40. I answered, and next she asked if I normally shop at Sainsbury’s or Morrison’s. I said no to that too. Then she wanted to know my name so she could take me off her list, but I didn’t give it to her and she just ended the call.

My mum, who’s 85 and has dementia, got calls from them not once, but twice yesterday and also the day before. She’s actually on the preferential list, so these calls shouldn’t even be getting through in the first place. It’s just awful. Just got a call from this number. A lady with a strong foreign accent asked straight away if she could speak to me by name, which obviously I never confirmed. She said she wasn’t selling anything but wanted to know if I’d shop at Sainsbury’s. I didn’t reply, instead I asked what the reason was. She claimed it was for a survey. Then she said I sounded lovely spoken and guessed I was in my early 60s - which I definitely am not! I wasn’t about to give away my real age, so I joked that was a huge insult since I’m just 12 years old! (Not true either.) She then addressed me as Mrs ****, so I told her she was wrong again because how could I be married if I’m only 12? After that, I said she should get on with her questions as I was recording the call for a TV show! Total fib, but she ended the call pretty sharpish.

This firm rang me last night and then once more this morning. They keep phoning now and then, which is pretty annoying. I usually let my answerphone pick up calls, but it’s frustrating when mates leave messages and I have to cut them off just to say I’m around. This company never leaves a message, so you have to check the caller ID to figure out who it is - not ideal when you’re tied up or having a shower.

A woman with an Asian accent rang, asking if I was Mr XXXXX. My landline has been on the TPS list for ages, and before me it belonged to Mr XXXXX. From dealing with these firms, I found out the old owner apparently took a £5k loan from Barclays - I even know their address and postcode. Anyway, I lost my temper, told the caller off, and hung up. What worked for me was getting a call blocker where you can set it to block calls starting with certain digits. I’ve blocked 0203 on mine cos nearly every scam call I get starts with that. My call guard’s great - it keeps record of the calls but my phone doesn’t ring and they just can’t get past it. Then when they try with a withheld number, it blocks them just the same!

This number rang me and when a woman with a thick foreign accent answered, I told her she’d just got through to a security unit linked to MI9, which tracks scammers. I warned her we were aware of her identity and that local cops would be paying her a visit soon. She sounded really anxious and said sorry, but I kept pretending before ending the call. Not long after, an English marketing firm phoned me trying to figure out who I was. Looks like these overseas call centres might actually be fronts for UK businesses dodging regulations.

Just noticed a missed call from this number on my landline. Honestly, stuff like freedom of information and sensitive things like bank info should be handled only by official government agencies or legit authorities. Got a call claiming to do market research. I nicely said I wasn’t interested in taking part. She then insisted she’d stop calling if I just answered a few questions. I told her again I wasn’t giving permission. Then she got quite annoyed and warned me to ‘brace for more calls’ since I wouldn’t cooperate.

Got another automated call today, likely some dodgy seller pushing solar panels or maybe trying to get you to make insurance claims. When will the authorities actually do something to block these time-wasting nuisances? Honestly, anyone who falls for it must be pretty gullible.

They ring almost daily, sometimes multiple times a day, looking for someone called Mrs Bell. I always say they’ve got the wrong number, but then they ask if I can assist them. I just say no since they’re clearly after someone else. One time, this bloke with an Indian accent actually laughed at me when I told him to leave me alone! Proper pain in the neck.

Got a call from a woman who said her name was Kelly Johnson, but kept getting my partner’s name wrong. I asked her again what her name was and where she was calling from. She repeated "Kelly Johnson," but I wasn’t satisfied. Told her I’d jot down her number and pass a message along. When I asked what company she was with and her contact details, she responded quite rudely. That’s when I told her to shove off and hung up. Checked the number with 1471 and it matched the one shown here. Anyone know how to block this number and any other linked to the company she claims to represent?

Got a call from someone claiming to be a consumer service. They knew my name and address, then started quizzing me about my shopping habits. I ended the call straight away and blocked the number after.

Got a call at 9pm on 08.07.2015 from someone with an Indian accent which was a bit hard to catch. I reckon they were trying to get me to do some kind of survey.
