I got a phone from someone calling herself "Jennifer" from London, saying she was with Microsoft. She claimed my computer was sending out reports about errors and maybe even leaking data. She wanted me to log into my PC so she could show me what was wrong and told me to visit some website. I figured she was gonna ask for some code to get into my computer. When I mentioned it was odd since I use a MacBook and not Windows, she just hung up on me.

I got a call from someone with a really strong Asian accent who somehow knew my name. He claimed it was about Microsoft on my computer. I asked him which computer I was talking about, and he asked how many I had. I said loads, and he kept pressing, asking if it was 5 or 10. When I asked why I had to tell him and who he even was, he just started speaking in what sounded like an Indian language. Not sure, but it definitely wasn’t English. So, I just hung up. Watch out, this is a trick to make you download some dodgy virus or malware onto your PC. They try to scare you using the event viewer, pointing out warnings and errors that are actually normal and already handled by Windows. There's no need to panic about anything you see there. Don't fall for the “technician's” advice, it’s all just routine stuff your computer does. Whatever website address they tell you to visit, don’t type it in. When I said I work in IT, the bloke just hung up on me.

Some bloke said he was calling from Microsoft Windows in Victoria, London, saying my computer had a virus and some problem. He asked me to press the Windows key and the R key at the same time but I didn’t go ahead with it. Then he said my computer was frozen and that I should log off and log back on.
