I just had a similar experience - an automated voice purporting to be from HMRC rang me. It insisted that either I or my solicitor must return the call immediately, or brace myself for the repercussions. Quite menacing, to say the least!

I received a rather ominous automated call purporting to be from HMRC. It had an air of menace, warning that 'you or your legal representative ought to return the call immediately or be ready for the repercussions.' Definitely sounds like a dodgy scam if you ask me!

I've received a rather alarming message indicating that if I fail to return the call to this number, I might be facing legal consequences.

I received a peculiar voicemail from a robotic voice that urgently instructed me to ring back. When I did, a chap identifying himself as Chris Rogers - complete with badge number 109852 - was on the line. Upon providing my name and address, he casually mentioned a case number: dc2023/a. Chris proceeded to grill me about my solicitor, claiming I was involved in some unpaid tax matter and a purported court case concerning tax fraud, of which I was supposedly already informed. He mentioned a letter dated March 3rd had been sent to me - though I certainly hadn’t seen anything. According to him, it was now too late to discuss settling my taxes, as they were supposedly passing my case over to the courts. Allegedly, I owe a precise sum of £2856 for the years 2014 to 2019 due to a so-called routine tax fraud investigation conducted every five years. When I asked him to resend the original correspondence, he told me he wasn’t with HMRC but rather the courts, implying it was beyond his control. He insisted that to retrieve any details regarding my case, I had to provide my national insurance number. Up to that point, they’d only asked for my name and address, which raised my suspicions. Since they couldn’t satisfactorily confirm their legitimacy, I requested that they resend the letter. However, they were adamant that they required my NI number to verify my identity, despite the fact that courts do not need such information. They asserted they’d already established my identity with the details I’d provided and the case number. Things took a turn when they intensified their pressure, warning me that once the call disconnected, the matter would escalate to a court issue and even hinted that law enforcement would appear at my door within two hours if I didn’t address the call immediately. Realising that I wouldn’t be fooled any longer, they abruptly ended the call without further ado. Curious to ascertain whether it was all a ruse, I called back using a false name and address for a little test run. This time, I went with Thomas Scott, living at No 7, DM1 6UN. Of course, that postcode doesn’t exist, but when he inquired whether the street was Mundem View, I agreed to go along with it. He repeated his earlier introduction, still calling himself Chris Rogers, badge number 109852, and oddly confirmed the same case ID: dc2023/a, despite my new alias. This time, he claimed he was contacting me from HMRC, rather than representing the courts as he had stated during my last call. His first request once again was for my lawyer’s details to confirm representation in the supposed court case. When I feigned ignorance about any legal proceedings, he sounded quite taken aback, asserting I should have arranged legal assistance by now. He maintained it was a review every five years for bank accounts concerning my tax contributions between 2014 and 2019, asserting that a sum of £2856 was owed. Allegedly, this had been flagged as a deliberate attempt to defraud HMRC, rather than an innocent oversight, and that I was to be summoned to court. When I challenged him with the fact that the name I had given was fictitious, he snapped back rather rudely, “What are you laughing at? Is it your tiny willy?” before slamming the phone down. Quite the experience, wouldn't you say?

About an hour back, I received a call from this number, but they didn’t bother to leave a message. I had a hunch something was off with it, as it resembles those typical call centre digits. After checking this site, it seems I’m not the only one; many others have warned that it's likely a scam, which isn't surprising. Whenever I get calls from numbers like that, my instincts tell me to steer clear.

Hello everyone! I had quite the experience today, on the 14th of September, around half past five. It was a robotic female voice on the line, warning me to contact them as it was HMRC, and that I would incur repercussions if I didn’t take action. By now, it’s 8 in the evening, and out of curiosity, I decided to withhold my number and give them a ring back. It turns out the number is registered to a Nancy O’Neil in London. It’s rather daft for a scammer to leave a personalised name attached to a phone they’re using for dodgy dealings when it’s switched off!
