Somebody said they were from Virgin Media and wanted the first couple of letters of my password, which I just made up, then asked for my dob, I made that up too. Then they said there was a problem accessing my account. Well, that’s because they’re a scammer! Virgin Media wouldn’t call me about broadband issues, I’d be the one ringing them 😂

I received a phone call from a woman who had a pronounced South Asian accent, claiming she was reaching out about my internet service. She mentioned that there had been ‘multiple users’ accessing my router and queried how many devices were linked to it, as well as whether I had shared my password with anyone. I instantly became wary but thought it might be amusing to keep her on the line for a bit to see how the conversation unfolded. In short, she indicated that my internet would be suspended for several days for some "investigations" into who might have compromised my router, yet I could continue using it if I downloaded some kind of software onto my PC or iPhone. At this point, I couldn’t help but burst out laughing, which prompted her to eventually hang up. A quick look up of the number revealed numerous reports from others who had received similar scamming calls attempting to get folks to download dodgy software. I must say, I take delight in having wasted her time. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone receiving similar scam calls to keep them chatting for as long as possible-it's a right laugh!

When I did, a foreign individual answered and appeared utterly clueless about my reason for calling. I explained the message I’d received, and she immediately requested my name. Out of the blue, she claimed there was a criminal case against me for tax evasion, alleging that I hadn’t paid my national insurance contributions. When I inquired about her identity and questioned her understanding of UK tax regulations, she rather rudely told me I wasn’t permitted to speak to her in such a manner before promptly disconnecting the call. It seems they are purportedly providing phone services to firms with highly dubious sales practices, wrongly claiming ties to the now-defunct Carphone Warehouse, which was acquired by Dixons-only for them to subsequently drop the Carphone Warehouse brand entirely. Hence, it stands to reason that Carphone Warehouse is no longer in operation. The troubling aspect lies with this entity that appears to be functioning from India; they've been asking potential customers for an upfront fee of £40, which is rather unusual, as legitimate providers typically do not require such payments. So, if you’re inclined to send off £40 to an Indian outfit in the vain hope of receiving phone services, then these folks seem to fit the bill. Consider yourself forewarned!
