This number tries to scare folks into ringing them back, telling you that if you don’t, the police will be involved. Sounds like a sneaky way to charge you loads or scare people into handing over cash. Seems like it’s aimed at places without PAYE systems, maybe run by people who don’t really get how PAYE works here. Honestly, just don’t bother calling back. Total scam.

Got a call from 0114 700 1591, some woman’s automated voice claiming to be from HMRC. They try to scare you into calling a solicitor or something... total scam. I’ve blocked the number now.

Got a call from someone who said they were with HMRC and that a solicitor had to get in touch with them. Total scammer - HMRC definitely wouldn’t handle things like that over the phone.

I got a call about my internet service and when I tried to return the call from a different phone, it just said the number wasn’t active. Bit dodgy if you ask me.

A caller told me they were from HMRC.

The call ended up going straight to voicemail. When I played the message, it was clear it was cut off halfway, so I couldn't really tell who they were trying to reach. A robotic female voice said something about me or my lawyer needing to ring them back, or else I'd have to deal with some sort of legal trouble.

Since the number looked local, I decided to ring back just to see who it was. To my surprise, they picked up immediately saying, “Welcome to HMRC, how can I assist you?” Bit of a giveaway, really, considering it normally takes ages - like an hour or more - to actually reach the real HMRC by phone. Total scam.

So on the second day I got a message claiming it was from HMRC, saying I had to ring right away and even gave the name of some HMRC officer handling my "case". Total scam, honestly quite funny to me. Seems like they’re probably going after older folks who might fall for it... Definitely FRAUD/SCAM.

Got a call around 11:40 today, they said they were from HMRC and left a message saying I'd get into trouble with the law if I didn't ring back. I phoned the real HMRC to check and told them about it - sounds like a total scam.

Appreciate all the comments, they've been really useful. Today I got two missed calls and two voicemails supposedly from HMRC, but like others have said, I reckon it's just a scam.

Totally with you on this - that voicemail they dropped sounded kinda harsh, especially when they started threatening legal stuff. Bit over the top really.

My missus got a call today and she was proper stressed out... I knew straight away it was dodgy! So I rang them back, and they picked up right away, which isn’t like the usual government calls, you know? Had a bit of fun with the bloke on the other end. I said, “Name’s Robin Banks,” and he went, “Alright mate, let me check the system.” Then I gave him a made-up dob, and he said, “Got your details, you owe £1986, police been informed and will come round to collect you.” She wasn’t too happy when I told her I knew it was a scam and how these lot should be ashamed for preying on folks especially now. But weirdly, she got annoyed that I’d wasted her time and insisted she hadn’t done anything wrong. We ended on some strong words, let me tell you! If you get a call from these muppets, probably from India or elsewhere, just hang up and don’t bother.
