Said they were from a company named Douglas Brown Associates. They rattled off stuff about PPI, my last holiday, and life insurance. The person was polite, but it was still an unexpected cold call out of the blue.

i didn’t pick up when this number called. do you think they just hang up after making sure a real person is on the other end? sounds like they’re building some kind of list of active numbers. i reckon such a database would be really valuable and probably shared or sold to others. maybe they even rank numbers by things like 1. answers calls 2. number of unanswered calls 3. can receive voicemail and so on.

I chose not to pick up the phone when this number rang. Is there a chance they’re just disconnecting calls after verifying they’ve got hold of an actual person’s number? I reckon a directory like that could be quite valuable and perhaps passed around. They might even categorize the numbers, grading them based on factors like: 1. Have they picked up? 2. How many attempts were made without a response? 3. Do they have voicemail set up and whatnot?
