I’m with O2, not BT. I’ve come across these types of scam numbers a few times, but usually they show a location when they call. This one just says unknown which is pretty odd. Don’t ever pick up or ring back, they’ll rip you off for sure if you do. Best thing is to just block them straight away.

This number rang me at about 9:50 pm yesterday but I didn’t pick up. I looked it up on Google and stumbled upon this site. I’m a bt mobile user too. Kinda worrying that it’s hitting all of us bt mobile folks. I’ve gone ahead and blocked the number now.

Got a call at 9.32pm on 29/3/18, just after I'd placed an order through Just Eat and entered my number on their site. Might be linked, not totally sure. Haven’t checked if I’ve been billed yet, but I’m guessing I have, cos when I rang the number back, it said something about reaching your spending limit. Best not to pick up or ring back.

Honestly, BT couldn't care less. They’re not willing to help or give me a refund. I thought BT was good, but they showed no understanding or sympathy at all. Straight to the point, they’d rather have me end my contract and walk away than sort out a refund.

Just like others have said, I accidentally called the number back after getting missed calls on both my work and personal mobiles, thinking it might be someone I know. Took a quick look at my online account and saw they charged me £7.91 for a call that only lasted a few seconds - I put the phone down straight away when I figured out it was a scam!

Called me a couple of times, never seen the number before so I blocked it straight away and had a look online. Found loads of others complaining about it too. I’m with BT as well but guess they just pick any prefix and use some random number maker. They probably don’t have a proper BT phone directory and couldn’t care less if you’re on the TPS list. Definitely flagging as dodgy because some people who answered got hit with really high charges.

I looked up the prefix 00 88 216 and found out it’s linked to a mobile satellite service called Thuraya, which is actually located in Dubai. Apparently their coverage spans a big chunk of the globe. If you’ve been getting calls from this number today, chances are your number is pretty close to others targeted too. Ofcom hands out phone numbers in chunks of 100,000, and there’s about 8,000 such chunks between 071000xxxxx up to 075999xxxxx and 077000xxxxx through to 079999xxxxx. Even if scammers could automatically dial 10 numbers each second, it would still take over three hours to dial through one entire batch of 100,000 numbers. After that, they just shift onto the next set.

I'd seriously recommend not picking up calls from this number. They try to trick you into giving your bank details and even ask for things like your national insurance number. It's a total scam and could cause you loads of trouble. Stay well clear!

Feels a bit sus that BT is allowing these calls, especially near the end of the tax year, maybe just to make their figures look better to investors. I never pick up unknown numbers, always double check who it is first. I’m a BT customer too.
