My mother is employed by HMRC, and she mentioned that the messages you receive reminding you to renew your tax credits are typically legitimate. That said, it’s always wise to remain cautious as scams can still occur. I hope this information is useful to you!

Got a call from someone pretending to be hmrc tax, think its a total scam. Dont bother ringing or messaging back cos its a premium number that rips you off. Seriously, offcom needs to do something and stop letting these scammers get away with it!

I've been inundated with nuisance texts from 60886, which appears to be linked to giffgaff. The message reads: "HMRC Alert: Please renew your tax credits online by the 31st of July...". Just thought I’d flag this as it was sent on 13th July 2021.

Here's the link to the UK government's official website about it. How exciting! A one-off payment of £500 for those of us working and receiving tax credits - that’ll certainly come in handy!

I came across Martin Lewis's endorsement of this on his Moneysaving Expert site, and I must say, I received the identical text message. Honestly, if it were a dodgy scam, I'd expect some sort of sketchy link popping up requesting personal banking information. However, it’s merely an informational message, and there’s really nothing scammers could extract from it!

Received a text from HMRC regarding a one-time payment of £500 for families that are on tax credits and need to claim it by the 23rd of April - they said it's automatic, so I don't have to do anything. Just check 'one-off payment' on the Gov UK website for details. I can't help but wonder if I’ll actually see that £500, as it feels too good to be true. Typically, giveaways like this set off alarm bells in my mind. Isn’t it the case that scams often lurk behind requests for a reply or some sort of dodgy link?

60886 claiming to be HMRC says there’s a one time £500 payment if you pay by 23rd April for working families. What a joke! HMRC would never operate like that, total scam!

Over the past few months, I've recieved quite a few messages from 60 886 saying "Your Government Gateway access code is. Your code expires in 15 minutes" but I never asked for any code. Got a random text from some number about minimum wage rates and apprenticeships. Was pretty confused since I wasn’t expecting anything on that topic. The pay for apprentices is pretty much the minimum wage, just like a few others have mentioned here.

I’m still at uni and not actually working yet, but I’ve been reading up on apprenticeships and the minimum wage stuff. Seems like even if you’re doing an apprenticeship, the pay isn’t great, which is a bit annoying. I get that it’s about learning, but it’s tough when you’ve got bills or rent to pay as well. Hopefully things get better once you’re qualified or can get a full job.
6 years
So, I’m doing my undergrad and was just thinking about how apprenticeships actually stack up, especially with the pay rates. Seems like minimum wage often doesn’t really match the work you’re asked to do in those roles, which is kinda frustrating. Like, apprentices are expected to learn heaps and still get paid barely enough to cover basic stuff. It makes me wonder if these positions are really worth it or if they just exploit young people trying to get experience.

Not sure how apprenticeships fit with the minimum wage stuff? I’m just an undergrad trying to figure it all out. Anyone else confused?
6 years
Even tho I’m just at uni and not working, I’ve been reading up on apprenticeships and how the minimum wage works for them. It’s a bit confusing, but seems like even if you’re doing an apprenticeship, you don’t always get the full minimum wage, especially at the start. Glad I’m not in that position yet!
6 years

Got a text from 60886 recently, same as last month when it was linked to a promotion for oapa johns pizza. They must have had a data breach or summin, cos thats how the scammers got your info. Dont trust the comments saying it’s all legit, those are prob part of the con too. Best to block it straight away, report the number, and tell your phone company. Heard some folks got extra premium texts charges from this number on they bill.

Got a message from HMRC saying to get in touch about my household income for 19/20 through their online chat. I reached out and it was legit. Looks like they’re carrying out random checks for tax credits.

Just got a text from 60886 asking about my total income for 19/20. It says it's from tax credits but there's no link to follow, only an invite to use their online chat. Does this sound legit to anyone?

This number showed up on my phone with a text saying I should do a webcam call with HMRC. I wasn’t sure it was genuine, so I phoned the number on my renewal paperwork instead. That one was legit. Seems they sent the text to offer a quicker option rather than waiting in line for ages. I was quite wary at first, so I thought best to double-check.

If you get dodgy texts, send them to 60599. Your network might charge for texts. HMRC don't send messages about tax refunds or ask for personal or bank details through text or email.

HMRC have reminded people who renewed their tax credits using guesswork for their income to update them with the real figures when they file their self-assessment. They’ve said they’ll be sending out letters and texts to those who estimated their self-employment earnings for 2017-18, nudging them to report their actual income by 31 January. The texts will be sent from 60886, which is the usual number HMRC uses.
