I hold power of attorney for my brother’s finances, and recently Shell Broadband was merged into TalkTalk after Shell sold off that part of their business. I noticed on his latest bill there are a couple of 30 second calls to the number 09068788123, each charging £2.23. This never showed up when he was still with Shell. What’s going on here? My brother has suffered two strokes in recent years which have impacted his mental faculties, and he's also gradually losing his sight. I can’t help but worry that someone might be exploiting him or trying to scam him. I’m really frustrated by everything that's been happening these past few weeks. Someone’s got to be held responsible for this mess. Because of these excessive phone fees, his monthly cost has gone up by roughly £5 since switching over. I’m now seriously considering moving him to a different provider.

Never pick up any calls from numbers starting with 09 - it’s a total rip-off. Make sure you report them to 'Action Fraud'; they handle these scams, but it’s important to report every phone scam so they can prioritise cases. Also, drop an email to your MP (I know they’re busy, but it’s worth it) with info about these calls and ask why the government hasn’t enforced tech to block foreign crooks from using UK landlines to trick people. I got a reply a while back, but unless loads of MPs get asked, nothing will really change.
